Independent Novel Project

English 10—Fall 2008

Parent notes and doctor’s office excuses will not be grounds for a penalty-free extension because I have given you two months to complete the assignment, and I am already giving you a five-day extension. All portions of the assignment must be submitted to avoid the fifty percent penalty.

In addition to turning in a print copy of the assignment, an electronic copy must also be submitted to turnitin.com by the above deadline. If you are having trouble with the site, you should email your assignment to me as a Microsoft Word attachment by Thursday, December 18. If you send the document to me in another format, I will not be able to open it, and you will be subject to the fifty percent late penalty. Do not send the work in the body of the email either. If I do not have the electronic file, I cannot upload the paper to turnitin.com. It is your responsibility to avoid these problems. You have access to all the resources you need at school. Do not wait until the last minute to submit. Technology excuses will not be grounds for a penalty-free extension.

If I discover that you have plagiarized any part of this assignment, you will receive a zero for the entire assignment. This assignment does not require any research and should be completed without using other sources.

To receive full credit for each section, you must fully answer the question using specific details from the novel. Being too general, simply restating the question, or answering the question with just the definition of the term at hand will keep you from getting full credit. You will also lose credit if your responses are not written in complete sentences.

The assignment should be typed using the form...

...n, identify the novel’s theme or themes. Provide specific evidence from the novel to support your answer.

Literary Elements

In this section, identify at least two examples of literary elements (symbolism, irony, foreshadowing, motifs, allusion, etc.) that your author uses. The examples should be different. Do not provide two examples of the same element. Explain how the literary element is used and its meaning, and then evaluate its effectiveness. I will not accept suspense as one of the elements.

Quotations

Identify at least one important quotation or line. Be sure to identify the source (the narrator or which character) and the page number. Explain why the quotation is important in the novel.

Evaluation of Title

Explain the significance of your novel’s title. Why is it or is it not appropriate? Would a different title be better? Explain.
