This paper explores the significance of soft skills in learners’ life; their achievements in terms of academic excellence and professional success. No doubt academic or technical knowledge, generally termed as hard skills, are prerequisites for employment. Yet soft skills, which comprise a long list of interpersonal skills and individual abilities, complement the academic knowledge and thus contribute greatly to enhance the employability of the students. This paper makes an earnest appeal to all those involved actively in the policy making, curricula designing, teaching and evaluation processes to acknowledge the need for soft skills in enhancing the employability of the students.

In India there had been a big hue and cry concerning the problem of unemployment because job availability was very meager. However, today the situation is changed. The modern global market and open competition is offering ample job opportunities in the country and abroad. But it is observed that in India unemployability is today a greater issue than unemployment. Former president of India Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam said, ‘it is not unemployment that is the major problem; it is the question of unemployability that is the major crisis in this competitive arena…’
So, today than ever before, it is our urgent need to acknowledge this problem if only we aim at increasing the employability of our students.
