Is Reputation Important? Since the day a child is born and they let out their first sound whether it be a cry, small whimper, laugh, or scream, all babies are born nice and do not intend to ruin their future. However, life takes its course on many people, humans suffer and therefore make bad decisions in life that they are not able to take back or re-do. That is why one's reputation can be so important, because once someone has done something there is no going back. Someone can spend their entire life building an amazing reputation, they are a nice caring person when all of a sudden they mess up and within seconds they are seen as a felon. After Iago purposely get Cassio drunk, Cassio says “Reputation, reputation, reputation! Oh, I have lost my reputation! I’ve lost the one immortal part of myself, and everything that remains is bestial”(Shakespeare II.ii.260-262). In this quote Cassio is complaining about how his reputation had been destroyed, this is so important to him because now he will lose his position in the military and most likely never be able to get it back because of the name he has written for himself. However, Iago replies back to Cassio saying “Reputation is a foolish thing, falsely imposed by others; it’s often gained without merit and lost undeservedly. One has not lost their reputation at all unless one really believes they have lost it”(Shakespeare II.ii.265-268) meaning that even though this happened to Cassio he can still get it back though it will be extremely tough because it will be an engraved thought on people's minds
