Metaphors truly speak volumes. The nature of our speech is highly metaphorical so without metaphor, it would be significantly more difficult to view concepts through the viewpoint of others, to understand, and to compare. Behind every metaphor is a hidden meaning. It is exactly this that shows the beauty of metaphor and that makes it so universal. Metaphors are so ingrained into our everyday lives, that it would be near impossible to go through just a day without its usage. Whether we are saying that our heart is broken after a breakup, that time is flying when we are enjoying the activity we are doing, or even to say you are trying to get an idea across to your friend, metaphors emphasize the intention and enhance people’s interpretation, giving them a frame of reference to go off of. Songs are just another facet in our lives which are no strangers to metaphors. The metaphor in music contributes greatly in how we perceive it and this perception is the foundation for our interpretation of it. Metaphors are so deep into our conceptual system, that sometimes people would mistake a metaphor for not being that, because it’s such an innate and automatic response to quickly interpret the metaphoric phrase for its pragmatic meaning, rather than its literal one.
