Community is defined as a group of people living in the same area. Although accurate, it misses out an important point. What makes a group of individuals a community is them interacting and helping each other. I grew up in a small town in India with a strong sense of community. Growing up in a place where I knew almost everyone by their first name, helping people became a second nature. Consequently it was not a big surprise when I was drawn to family medicine from the very beginning of medical school. I remember as a child, seeing the same friendly face of my primary care physician every time anyone in the family used to get sick. Now after 15 years, although the small town has become a city and I don 't know the name of every person living there, my family still sees the same doctor and he always has the same smile ready to greet us.

Listening to people, trying to understand their stories and struggles is something that I have always deeply revered. I love learning about different cultural backgrounds and working with a diverse patient base. Working in different settings I have learned how to use these qualities as my strengths to give my patients the best care possible.

I firmly believe that health maintenance and disease prevention are the two most important aspects of medicine. Family medicine through its unique longitudinal and community-oriented approach to health, provides a platform to promote preventive care and an opportunity to motivate patients and encourage lifestyle changes through continuity of care. As I enter the new phase in my training, I am committed to provide high quality patient centric and evidence based care, while maintaining an emphasis on preventive medicine and continuity of care for my patients of all
