As someone who has lived overseas for many years, I understand the importance of a diverse and inclusive community. My time living in Beijing and Taipei exposed me to a wide variety of people from all around world, each with their own unique stories and culture. My experiences overseas made me realize the power of a strong community and how diversity is absolutely vital for a flourishing academic environment. When I moved back to the States, I was genuinely surprised by how nice and accepting everyone was, and it made me realize the importance of mutual respect and the breakdown of cultural barriers. In my readings, I have agreed with the term for culture in the book?? Cultural Diversity?? written by Jerry V. Filled. It states that "One 's culture becomes one?s paradigm, defining what is real and what is right.? in other words culture is taught to children by family it is a variety of learned behaviors, beliefs, values, traditions etc. All of which help shape a person and is a huge portion of who they are.
Ironically, one of the “catch-22” takeaways from the overall exchange program and from the final reflection conference was that as much of a great and insightful experience it was to experience a completely different culture or perhaps be exposed to a diversity of cultures all at once, it also reinforced this idea of “difference” and “separateness.” All in all, though, the student-exchange program provided a taste for open-mindedness, awareness and hope for the future, and also a vision for what a multicultural world could truly be like without prejudices and racism. When it comes to teaching, I think it is important to address differences in the classroom, and as a teacher, I feel it is my duty to encourage my students to see the beauty in such differences as opportunities for possibilities. I feel it is important to recognize one’s heritage, race, and values, but I also feel that at times, it is equally important to detach oneself from such in order to allow for one to be exposed to new perspectives and alternative ways of life.
Tim Wise’s video, “Beyond Diversity: The Hidden Curriculum of Privilege - Part 5” resonated with me. In the video, he gave examples of institutionalized racism in institutions of higher education. He gave the example of the University of Texas ghetto party. The University of Texas is my alma mater. I graduated from the university of Texas a little over a year ago, and I have tremendous respect for the educational institution. It is a wonderful university and in a lot of ways it champions diversity. However, during orientation, before I had even started class at the University, I encountered more racial discrimination and sexism than I had at in my life. My college orientation began as I witnessed bleach bombs dropped on students of color and ended with a sexist party that depicted women in the office or workplace as sexual objects for men thereby championing sexual discrimination in the workplace (the name of the party is not appropriate to post in an academic forum). As students, education is essential when gaining knowledge in areas in which they are not familiar with. Although students are exposed to the core curriculums, they are lacking the ability to retain knowledge from the world around them. As an Asian American, I receive many questions that involve my cultural background and lifestyle. Even though Asian Americans are considered as the “minority,” I often find myself asking the same questions about other backgrounds. Being able to learn about world culture may bring more awareness to our actions, knowledge of our peers’ backgrounds, and an understanding of diversity around the world.

As a multi-cultural Japanese and Chinese individual and an international student at MSU, I have had many experiences that enhanced my personal cultural awareness. Michigan State University embraces students with different cultural backgrounds and ethnicities. Here I am able to participate various events with people carrying different life stories. For example, I have worked as an intern with refugees in the Emergency Management Office of East Lansing via the MSU Global Internship Program. I volunteered in the Red Cedar International Elementary School for their “One world, many stories” program with families and children from more than 16 countries. I also conducted a survey titled “Family Resources for MSU international parents” supported by the MSU Family Resource Center. In addition, I advocated for international children living in Spartan Village so they could get a playroom. These experiences with a variety of cultures have made me a more caring and open person.
Diversity in a university is so important. First of all “diversity enriches the educational experience”. Students are able to learn from one another’s experiences. Also diversity helps maturity through most students. With diversity, students are able to learn about the other people’s experiences and are able to break down the stereotypical “walls” that our country has built. While students are breaking down these stereotypical “walls”, students will be able to effectively communicate with others of various backgrounds. Just because other perspectives are incorporated in the classroom, this doesn’t mean that everyone will become more understanding and appreciative of other cultures. When multicultural practices have rigorous standards, allow the advancement of social communications with other cultures, and allow the advancement social justice concepts both inside and outside of the classroom, this is when students will become more appreciative of other cultures (Ladson-Billings, 1995, p.162).
Coming to the United States for college can introduce cultural differences that even the most prepared students might not anticipate. From campus life to classroom etiquette, US school can be quite a different experience from learning in other countries around the world. It is rather natural for students from other countries to join communities that somehow remind them of home and give them the opportunity to remain connected with their roots and at the same time bring the world a little closer to fellow classmates. By raising collective cultural awareness, organized expressions of diversity which create a cultural spillover from which we all benefit.
Diversity in classrooms can open student’s minds to all the world has to offer. At times diversity and understanding of culture, deviant experiences and perspectives can be difficult to fulfill, but with appropriate strategies and resources, it can lead students to gain a high level of respect for those unlike them, preferably from a judgmental and prejudiced view. Diversity has a broad range of spectrums. Students from all across the continent; students from political refugees, indigenous Americans, and immigrants bring their cultural and linguistic skills to American classrooms. Students not only bring their cultural and linguistic skills, but they bring their ethnicity, talents, and skills.
Students in the United States experience varying degrees of Multicultural Education. To my benefit, I was brought up in a learning environment that was culturally accepting and engaging. I was enrolled in the Franklin Pierce School District for my entire public education career and at Pierce College during my last two years of high school. Since the beginning of my academic career, I’ve been exposed to a learning environment filled with a rich amount of diversity among students which in turn produced well-roundedness in myself. In my experience as a FPSD student, I’ve shared experiences with fellow peers of different races, cultures, and socioeconomic standings.
