Nursing is one of the largest profession in healthcare system. Nurses play important role to improve the patient’s outcome. According to the Institute of Medicine (IOM) report to manage America’s increasingly complex health care system nurse’s education and competencies should be advanced. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and the IOM joined together created to improve Future of nursing.
There are numerous report recommendations of Future of nursing by IOM. According to recommendation 4 nurses with degree increase 80% by 2020. Author fits in the number 4 recommendation. BSN program takes nurses more in-depth in their training which allows nurses to have a broader understanding in the field, and ultimately in what would be the desired patient outcome, safety. Doing BSN author improved her critical thinking and leadership roles and able to implement in her present work place. Recommendation 5 is Double the number of nurses with a doctorate by 2020. This will be challenging for the author to achieve it. She encourages her colleagues those who have the degree to go for masters and doctorial nursing. Author herself thinking of doing her masters in nursing after the BSN program. Eventually she wants to enroll in DNP program. Because author interested in direct patient care and if she chooses DNP program, she will be competent in teaching and clinical practice. Ever expanding clinical practice opportunities will enable nurse educators both to teach and to keep up-to-date of advances in nursing practice. Recommendation 6- lifelong learning for nurses is very essential in today’s health system. As the healthcare system incorporates with many complex patient’s nurses need to learn new changes and technology to improve better patient’s outcome. As she lives in Canada doing BSN helped her to get the nursing registration (Entry level). She was applying for the new job opportunities and she felt doing BSN helped her to find the job more easily. Increasing the level of education definitely promote her to improving developing her leadership, clinical skills and knowledge to enhance the patient care and safety. There are many studies (Aiken ) found in between certain years that the hospital that employed more BSN-prepared nurses experienced reduced mortality than hospitals that did not add more BSN-prepared nurses (RWJF, 2014). So the connection between nurse education and patient outcomes was so evident. So author think completing BSN is the great opportunity for her to find the job in hospitals.
