Educational reformer, Horace Mann, once said “Every addition to true knowledge is an addition to human power.” My whole life I have heard that teachers are the backbone of every society. Without teachers, mankind would be decades behind where we are today. It is my goal to become an outstanding teacher, just like the ones who have invested their time in order for me to learn and grow. I have been inspired by influential people, been able to teach and lead a group of my peers, and have listened to other teacher’s insights about being a teacher.

According to my English teacher, Hannah Cates, “Teaching is a field where I can be creative each day. I can also feel as though I have the ability to positively impact future generations. To me, teaching is about learning. Learning about myself through the eyes of my students, and providing moments where students may learn something new about life.” Psychology and History teacher, Gwyn Skrobul, thinks “Being a teacher today is different than it was many years ago. Today 's society has targeted teachers as being the biggest problem with our growth and competitiveness in the world. Teachers are seen as incompetent to make professional decisions about curriculum and instruction. When I began teaching in 1986, it was a great joy. I still thoroughly enjoy the insights and humor of young people! Teaching is who I am. It is a calling from God. I have been called to inspire and stimulate young people and help prepare them for life. Everywhere I go, everything I do, I see through the lens of teaching...how can I use that in the classroom?...how will that excite my students?” In making these comments, it is clear that teachers have a common goal. Teachers want their students succeed in and outside the classroom and to be the very best that they can. Teaching is not for everyone. Everyone has their own calling and teaching is mine. It doesn’t matter about the pay or title about your name, it’s about teaching the next generations of students. Besides, teachers are not here for the money. If they were here for money, this wouldn’t be their job, they would be a dentist or surgeon. Teachers do their jobs because they want children to learn and discover who they are through the process of teaching. Equally important, a large amount of teachers will spend countless hours before and after school to insure that their students are getting the best
