“America is another name for opportunity”.America is a land full of freedom and opportunity for immigrants that emigrate from different countries. They all try to find a new way of living and starting a new life in America. An American is someone who honors his country, someone who is a hard worker, someone who expresses himself.
Everyone from different countries appreciate and honor the country they live in. I can relate to Anzia Yezierskis idea of what it means to be an American because I believe if you want to be someone and reach your goals you have to work hard for them. “Like a hungry cat rubbing up to it’s boss for meat”. Noda she explains that being an American and being another race both fall into honoring your country wherever you came from. Kesaya E. Noda idea of what being an American means really relates to mine because in her essay she talks about being another race as well as being American and still keeping pride and honor of both countries. “I come from a people with a long memory and a distinctive grace. Well there are certain things that might define America, for example America for some people could be the land of opportunity, There are many reasons why different types of people all across the world might pursue the land of opportunity, America. That one person leaving their home land might be a parent, a parent looking to pursue a better life for their children. A better life than the one they lived. America is still “The Land of Opportunity” because there is much more freedom in America than most other countries. There are no caste systems to limit what someone who is in America can do. Additionally an American’s destiny is created by his/her own choices, not the choices of his/her family or peers. America is a country founded by immigrants for immigrants, and although the Land of Opportunity has suffered an economic crisis in the last decade, it still maintains its reputation for being the greatest country in the world. The United States is still “The Land of Opportunity” because there are no caste systems, one’s destiny is made by his/her choices, and American freedoms are a part of everyday life.
What does it mean to be an American? To me, what it means to be American is to Pledge Allegiance to your country, to proudly boast that you live in a country that has a justification for existence, to be given opportunity. Although there are many definitions of what it means to be an American, does being an American really just mean being successful in society? The point of this essay is to describe the different meanings and my feelings of what it is to be “American”.
An American is a person who understands that through hard work that anything is achievable and that dedication is a necessity to succeed. A person who takes pride in all aspects of life including their work. “ Well there's pride in every American heart, and it's time we stand” (Greenwood Lines 24-25). This quote displays the claim that to be an American you must be prideful, and that pride originates from the heart. Greenwood used the word pride, and he was referring that all Americans have pride in what they worked for or what they attained through their hard work.
The definition of an American, is someone who is a citizen of the United States. Many African Americans, and immigrants struggled to become actual Americans in their lifetimes, because others didn 't see them as actual people; and based it on the color of someone. In today 's world people who live in America consider themselves as Americans, but to me there is certain qualities that make a person an American. To me being a true American is not based off of what Country they were born in, or what race their parents are, or even if they were immigrated to the United States. People from all over the world would say that maybe people could base this off of someone 's family heritage, or where they were before they came to America. If you were asked what makes an American an American what would you base it off of? To me there are four specific characteristics that make a person a true American; those three things would be, freedom, individuality, belief in the country, and happiness.
America is the land of the free and the place of opportunities for everyone. Where the common man can life a comfortable lifestyle. A country that allow people to live a long, prosperous life. The red, white, blue that provides individuals to believe in their own religious, politics, and decided their own choices. The place that accept and respects various cultures, which has various customs. However, the ethnicity of people should be respected, too. Right now, America only recognized black people for their physically contributions such as fashion, music, art, but reject the race of black people.
What does America mean? It is a hard question to answer, and there is no wrong answer because depending on a person’s past it can shape someone’s answer to this question. To me, America means achievement, freedom, and success. I have thought of these answers because of my past, and my families past. Another reason for those answers is because my family is foreign and came to America, for the reasons I listed, and after learning about my family's past, I can stand firm in my answers to What America means to me.
