Humans are sinful by nature, ever since the fall humans have been cheating, stealing, lying, killing and disobeying. Thankfully we have a God who loves us, forgives us and welcome us with open arms. James Schaap’s short stories, Pitcher’s Hands and The Voice of the Body both illustrate human nature from a Christian perspective. Our desires, wants and what we truly love guides and motivates our actions. In a way we are what we love, we are an amalgamation of our conscious and unconscious desires. This can be seen through Curt in Pitcher’s Hands. Curt, who is seen as a respectable young man in the community sleeps with her girlfriend Mel and she becomes pregnant. The unplanned pregnancy was not a fluke or a one-time thing for Curt and Mel. What we believe motivates us, one cannot truly believe in something if your actions do not follow. Our faith does in fact affect our actions. Revelations 3:16 relates to this idea, “So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot I will spew thee out of my mouth.” Curt and Mel’s actions in Pitcher’s Hands demonstrates that they what they portrayed they believed their actions did not follow.
