How Does Technology Negatively Affect Sleep?

As a rule, almost everyone uses some form of technology before bed, but what people do not realize is that the use of electronics can negatively impact their sleep. For example, studies have shown that when a person, typically a teenager, but not always, plays a video game before they try to sleep they will fall asleep later and have a less restful slumber. Similarly, people who often utilize the internet or their cell phones on a daily basis are more likely to have some form of sleep deprivation, snoring, insomnia, sleep apnea, etc., than those who do not use their electronic devices regularly. Moreover, cell phone usage has steadily climbed throughout the world for the last few years, especially in teens and young adults, even poor and remote countries have large amounts of cell phone users. …show more content…

If a person has an electronic device with them in their room and or bed, they are more likely to be woken up by such device. In fact, in a recent 2013 study, preformed by several doctors and professors to analyze the impact of that cell phones and other devices have on sleep, 22% of the subjects reported that they fell asleep with a device near them at night, and 10% reported that they are woken up every now and then by their device in the middle of sleep.
