I wouldn’t be the person I am today if it wasn’t for the effect my family, friends, society, and the media have all had on me. While I have spent time reading over this subject of self-concept, it has opened my eyes to seeing how much all of the different areas of my life have played a large role in making me who I am. I never put much thought into how together they have build me to be me but the resounding truth is family, friends, society, and media all have had an influence on who I am. It will continue through out my life to have influence on how I view myself. Starting with family, I believe that this part of my life has had the greatest influence on me up till this point in my life. My families direct definition of me was always in positive way. When I was little a few things my parents would always call me were little man, my dad would call me mini me, and my cousin Tyler and I would be called peat and repeat. These names influenced me to always aspire to be a man and being man meant being like my dad. My dad and I have very similar personalities likes and dislikes this has helped bring the name mini me into some truth. My cousin Tyler and I have the same goals in life and career choices. If these names had any true impact of my relationship with my father or cousin I honestly do not know. If they have then I think they where the best possible turn out. There are three family scripts that have had the largest impact on how I am. The first script I can remember from when I was younger is that we need to value the time we have with each other. Sadly this wasn’t just taught me through words. I learned this also by losing my cousin Bay-O when I was in first grade. She was only a year older then me, we were ... ... middle of paper ... ...ts say. I am a gun owner and a proud supporter other the second amendment and in the media people who think like me are show to be uneducated, backwoods, and uncaring. I am none of those things and I am completely the opposite of all of those stereotypes. The media has influence me to believe that most members of the media are totally disconnected from the really world and only believe what will help their side regardless if it is true or not. In conclusion, I have learned that many different people that I never had thought of and would not have thought of without this class have influenced me in many different ways. The way family, peers, society, and media have influenced me is far greater then what I could completely explain in this paper. I truly believe that I will never now the fully effects of family, peers, society, and media has had on the person I am.
Wilson in his book does a good job of discussing the arguments for pro-gun rights, but he believes that these people’s arguments for their gun rights should not be more important than protecting the greater good of people. He also points out to the reader that often times people for gun rights have a personal bias and accuse news coverage on the issue as being mostly liberal. Even though the research collected by Wilson shows that most news coverage tends to be neutral. Wilson then goes on to discuss how often times advocates for gun control will never attack the media, and say that there is bias or that people for gun rights are bias.
The three most common misconceptions and stereotypes that are given to gun owners is that they are Irresponsible, rednecks, and that they are paranoid,. I believe that this group of people needs to be better understood for the simple reason that they are not anything close to what they are perceived to be. They are a community that not only consists of gun owners, but everyday people. Everyday people that consists majorly out of law abiding citizens. I believe that gun owners should be given a second opinion by the public instead of being criminalized only for practicing a right that was developed by our founding fathers years ago only to keep it alive for others to enjoy. People are quick to judge what they do not understand, and do not understood that not every gun owner is irresponsible and even unworthy of owning something that brings them joy. A common misinterpretation of the gun community is that they are just a bunch of uneducated rednecks and are simply a degeneration to our society. Another stereotype that gun owners are given is that they are a bunch of paranoid rights activists who feel the government is out to get them, at times they may even be called preppers (Things That Kill People, 2013). These are t...
There’s an event in everyone's life that changes you, whether it be a simple hello or a death in the family. Tragically, mine begins with my mother marrying her second husband. The lessons I learned from this man shaped me into the person I am today. I came from a bad situation and he took my family in and and showed me that not every man is the same. Perseverance, the ability to forgive, and willingness to change your life for the better are just some of the things he taught me. If it weren’t for the little talks we had I wouldn’t be hopeful that I am, that I will turn my life around.
The essay How You See Yourself by Nicholas Mirzoeff discusses the evolution of art. The author discusses the use of art to represent changing identities over the years including cultural practices and societal expectations. The selfie, according to Nicholas Mirzoeff’s essay, is the equivalent of a self-portrait in the previous centuries preceding the technological development required for the present day selfie. The essay explores the different periods and the significance of art, particularly self-portraits, the selfies of the time, and their development over time. The author focuses on different themes including heroism, gender definition, and the focus of an image. Mirzoeff effectively provides examples illustrating and reinforcing the themes he highlights in his essay.
Television media can be misleading to the millions of American citizens who watch it. Out of the 653 gun policy stories twelve have been reported on TV (Outgunned.9). While the reporters and newspaper crew make interesting stories out of several school shootings, they leave out millions of times citizens use guns to stop crime each year. Media can present a very misleading picture that guns do more harm than good. This leads people to believe that guns should be limited or even banned. (Outgunned.9)
The gun control debate has been in the news a lot lately. Their are two clear sides to the debate. One side states that they don’t want their second amendment rights taken away. While the other side sees guns as dangerous and wants reforms set in place so that certain people can’t have access to them. Some are against reform that, “private citizens who own guns are constantly told by gun-control advocates that only fully trained government agents should be allowed to possess and use guns” (Krey 41). The pro gun reform advocates see this because of the number of shootings that have happened in the past years. They also attribute our violent culture to one of the reasons the shooting rates have gun up. The pro gun reform advocates have used different outlets throughout the media to get their message out and try to start a movement, in which they are trying to get the public to have the same view point as them. This goes for the pro gun reform and anti gun reform groups. The media has a huge impact on how the public views gun ownership through their coverage.
Upon reading the article Meta-Perceptions (judgment made by the self about what others think about the person): How Do You See Yourself? There is one thing that surprised me, our self-concept is fundamentally influenced by individuals, like our mother, (as a primary
Throughout this class, there were many social issues and whom they affect discussed. I loved this class for the reason of getting myself more familiar with what is happening around me and around everyone else in the world. This class was an eye opener to major social issues that people are faced with so in this paper, I am going to talk about the seven objectives we were supposed to obtain from this class.
Who I think I am? I’m not exactly sure who I think I am or how to describe who I think I am. I tend to act differently around certain people. Constantly changing to try to seek approval. Constantly in fear of accidentally doing something wrong; that I might say something wrong and all my friends will abandon me or leave me for someone better. I think this fear came from when my best friend was taken from me. I had known her since preschool, but she had met another girl and she stopped talking to me completely. I’m in constant fear that this will happen to me again, so I struggle to be accepted. I don’t want to be forgotten again.
The education system and the peer group within the school system are important socialisation agents in an individual’s life. Children from an early age absorb the values, attitudes and beliefs of the society in which they participate (Ashman & Elkins, 2009).
For example, this affects young females because is misleading them and discourage them from being unique .This shows that young teens at an early age are being exploited .For example, media is used to mislead individuals in order to become someone that they are not. Media has portrayed woman to be sexual and for men to disrespect them. A perfect woman described by men should be beautiful in the outside and have no intelligence. This video is powerful and expanded the course material because it shows real life cases in the video to show how teens are suffering. This challenged my thinking because at an early age females should only be focused finding their inner self .They should be able to decide who they want to be and how they should dress. I agree that media is affecting younger generation mindset because they are using social norms in order to tell them what it is right and wrong. Also, this video has helped me understand that is time for women to have authority by becoming successful. I believe that woman should not be downgraded but admired for their intelligence. The data that was shown in the video challenged my thinking because there are not a lot of women in
This talks about how family is agent of socialization through childhood, race and class. How this relates to my social group is that my parents have always taught me and my siblings that in order to achieve success you must work hard by studying and doing well in school. It also plays a role in my social group because my family come from Nigeria, where parents strive for their children to be successful and to have a good education. Even though we are of the lower middle class, my parents still expect for us to be successful in life, because they do not want us to have the type of lives that they
Upon reading the essay prompt, I took a few moments to introspect. I thought back to every experience that helped mold me into the person I am today. As human beings, we are influenced by many aspects of our surroundings. Even as children, we develop certain attributes through observation, or through conditioning by our parents. These attributes may not be always positive, but the combination of both positive and negative qualities form the people we are today. No one is perfect; nevertheless, some are fortunate enough to have their strengths outweigh their weaknesses. I believe I am one of those lucky people.
My family is who I have socialized most with since they were the first ever people I interacted with. Family has had a large influence over who I am today because they are the people who I learned almost everything from (primary socialization). The reason I have such high morals and values is because of my family. By observing and taking from their behavior I was able to form my own values through nurture. Although they taught me a lot of beneficial things that make me a better person, I have also learned from some of my family members bad habits. My uncle always smoked around the kids, including myself, when I was younger and I never liked the smell and now I associate that memory with cigarettes and it makes me not have any desire to smoke whatsoever. I also had another uncle who went to jail a lot for selling drugs and other related things, and since I definitely did not want to end up in jail I now make smart decisions, and associate myself with people who benefit me. On the whole my family has made me a nobler person by both their good and bad
Is the “self” affected by the outside world? Whitman seems to think so, but Descartes claims that we cannot trust the outside world because we are being deceived by an evil demon. Both philosopher’s obviously differ on what we can and cannot consider to be true. Descartes and Whitman had very different ideas of the self and what could affect the self. While Whitman believed that we could achieve knowledge of the self through the senses, Descartes argued that we should throw the senses to the side and only believe in what we could distinctly perceive and truly understand. However, if we mix both of these philosopher’s thoughts on the “self” we can really grow to understand and experience the world around us in a much meaningful way and therefore, allowing us to know the “self” and helping it grow.
