AS2: Islamic Influence in Western Civilization In the year 610 A.D., Muhammad, a forty-year-old merchant, acquired a divine message from an archangel named Gabriel. Until his death, he continued to receive and preach these messages. Muhammad had created a new monotheistic religion. His mission was to lead all people, under the rule of the single God. Islam expanded quickly due to its competitors, Byzantine Christianity and Sassanian Zoroastrianism in constant battle; Caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab’s Islamic expansion; and the unification of the empire through the Arabic language. Arabic advancements in medicine and navigation include a successful treatment for an eye disease called “Trachoma,” and the Equatorium, which had improved navigation by improving the calculation of latitude and longitude. With agriculture, the Muslim people brought many different types of crops to the European continent, expanding the diet of the Europeans, and had brought the use of astronomical tables which were used in conjunction with these new crops. Structures such as baths were constructed, borrowing from civilizations prior to the Arabic Empire. The Arabic language and the Arabic traditions enlightened many. The Mozarab sect of Christianity was a group of Christians who lived during the Muslim rule in Spain but did not convert to Islam. They did, however, adopt the Arabic language, dress and customs.
