Ignoring the ethnic borders, they created new ones, which caused trouble in the future. Imperialism had both positive and negative effects on Africa. One of the negative effects of imperialism on Africa was economic exploitation. During the late 1800s poverty, unemployment, and homelessness had become prevalent throughout Europe as a side effect of the Industrial Revolution.
