The House on Mango Street is a book. It's about two girls who live in the barrio. It's by Sandra Cisneros and the main character is Esperanza. Esperanza and Alicia are the strong female characters in this book. I think Esperanza and Alicia are the female characters who are the strongest and will be independent. Esperanza got a job so she could pay for catholic school,. She wants to go to catholic school so she can become a strong independent person. She also rejects the Cinderella complex. The Cinderella complex is when a girl waits for a man to come and take her away. She doesn't believe in this because she wants to be her own women and not depend on others. Alicia takes two train and a bus to college because she believes college is important
