I feel that this question was not made to me as a hobbit, but to my experience-- my life’s adventures in the agony and sweat of the spirit, not so much for glory and profit, but to find from the materials of the spirit something which was not known of before.
One tragedy of our day is a general and universal physical fear of death that has caused many to fear adventures. Death will come anyway therefore we should not fear it. For this reason, there should only be one question: How shall I live? Ignorant of what it means to live, the young hobbits living today have forgotten the problems of other peoples which alone can make life worth living because only that is worth living about, worth the agony and the sweat.

I refuse to accept such actions. It is easy enough to say that adventure is good simply because you might become renowned: That when the last thud of dirt has covered the last visible place of your coffin within the darkness of the earth, that even then there will be one more sound: That of exuberant voices, still praising. I refuse to accept this. I believe that you will not merely endure this adventure: You will prevail. I know you will do this, not so much because you alone have the ability, but because you have a soul, a spirit capable of compassion and sacrifice and endurance. The hobbit’s, the adventurer’s, duty is to live for others. It is our privilege to help all endure by giving them hope, by reminding them that there are others who have courage and honor and pride and compassion and pity and sacrifice which have been the glory of the past.
