The Hobbit Research Paper
What hero compromises the intense struggle between good and evil? J.R.R. Tolkien’s book involves a hobbit who reaches out of his comfort zone to show that hobbits succeed at beginning adventures. Tolkien uses symbolism and epithets to show the rigorous processes of how an ordinary creature becomes a mythic hero.
John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was born on January 3, 1892 in Bloemfontein, South Africa. He studied at Oxford pursuing a degree in English language and literature. This later gave him the thought of creating his own imagined world known as Middle-Earth. He then later married Edith Bratt, had four children, and became a professor at Oxford. The Hobbit, first published in 1937, had some of Tolkien’s invented language and mythology. The plot and character’s of The Hobbit combined the ancient heroic Anglo-Saxon and Scandinavian epics, which he studied at Oxford. The Hobbit “is immersed in folk tradition” (Matthews). The character Bilbo Baggins was inspired by the rural Englishman of the 1930s. Tolkien was inspired by ancient European myths leading him to write Lord of the Rings, a prequel to The Hobbit. On September 2,1973, J.R.R. Tolkien died at the age of eighty-one.

...when he calls him “the burglar.” When Thorin Oakensheild comes into the story, he is described as “son of Thrain son of Thror King under the Mountain” (Tolkien 180). Smaug the “Golden” and the “Magnificent” is a dragon that is hard to kill unless he is killed on his breast. Bilbo is known as the “Barrel Rider.” Gandalf the wizard is given the epithet Gandalf the Grey and Gandalf the White. Bard, the man who killed Smaug is also known as “Bard the Bowman” (Tolkien 230). Beorn’s use in The
Hobbit as an epithet is the “skin changer” (Tolkien 108).
The Hobbit shows J.R.R. Tolkien’s belief in the ancient heroic tales of the Anglo-Saxon and Scandinavian epics. He asserts that a being goes through many adventures with the help of friends who believe that anything can happen. Tolkien reveals how bravery and courage make ordinary individuals succeed at ordinary tasks.
For example, Bilbo fits the role of the hero, because he sacrificed and helped all the characters along the journey. Stated in the amazing book, The Hobbit, the author wrote, “It was at this point that Bilbo stopped. Going on from there was the bravest thing he ever did. The tremendous thing that happened afterwards were are nothing compared to it. He fought the real battle in the tunnel alone, before he ever saw the vast danger that lay in wait” (Tolkien, J.R.R., The Hobbit, page #233). Bilbo had basically sacrificed himself, so all of the other characters and himself could get through the journey safely. Their hero, Bilbo became braver each and every day while he tried to help and support them. Written in the fantastic book, The Hobbit, the author has written, “‘I have no idea at the moment-if you mean about removing the treasure. That obviously depends entirely on Smaug. Getting rid of dragons is not all in my line, but I will do my best to think about it. Personally I have no hopes at all, and wish I was safe back at home’” (Tolkien, J.R.R., The Hobbit, page
Within J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit, Tolkien uses the character of Bilbo Baggins to reveal to the reader the constant struggle between heroic and anti-heroic qualities within Bilbo and ourselves.
...s. Bilbo is the one that gives the precious Arkenstone to Bard to help stop a war from starting. If it was not for Bilbo’s courage, Thorin would still be fighting for the Arkenstone and might have also been hurt. Bilbo also helps the dwarves by being a good leader and helping them find a way out of Smaug’s lair. Without Bilbo, the dwarves would not have the audacity to try finding a way out of Smaug’s cave. Bilbo, like a real hero, always makes sure that he finishes the task he sets out to do. Without Bilbo, the dwarves would not be able to finish all the tasks that they want to finish. Bilbo is also the reason why the dwarves are still alive. Bilbo saves the dwarves from many different disasters. The disasters range from the spiders to Smaug. Through good or bad, Bilbo has been able to show the characteristics that a real hero should be able to show.
The main character in the book The Hobbit, by J.J.R. Tolkien is Bilbo Baggins. In the beginning of the book he is a calm, predictable hobbit. That starts to change when Gandalf and the dwarves ask him to go on an adventure. He leaves his hobbit hole in The Hill. On his adventure, he goes through many dangerous things. These things change who Bilbo is as a character and as a person. Throughout the book his conflicting family backgrounds, relations with the dwarves, and adaptability create an amazing story.
Tolkien has created a world in which millions of people can go to escape to. He wrote stories that expand and capture the mind as you follow the fellowship, or as you learn of Bilbo’s next action. He created a rich back story to his world, creating myths as if the world he created has existed for millennia. He created Hobbits and Dwarves. Tolkien brought mystery and magic to the world stage, and that is why he is deserving of the title “father of modern fantasy”.

While appearing as an unlikely hero, Gandalf the wizard was the first person to spur Bilbo to go on the journey, and become a hero, when he first arrived at Bilbo's house, "Good morning!" Bilbo said, and he meant it. The sun was shining, and the grass was very green. But Gandalf looked at him from under long bushy eyebrows that stuck out further than the brim of his shady hat."
