The Hewlett-Packard Company, commonly known as HP, is a very large global company headquartered in Palo Alto, California, United States. Its products are concentrated in the fields of computing, printing, and digital imaging. It also sells software and services.
Histroy and facts
HP was founded in 1939 by Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard, who had both graduated from Stanford University in 1934, as a manufacturer of test and measurement instruments. Their first product was a precision audio oscillator, the Model 200A. Their innovation was the use of a light bulb as a temperature stabilized resistor in a critical portion of the circuit. This allowed them to sell the Model 200A for $54.40 when competitors were selling less stable oscillators for over US$ 200. One of their earliest customers was Walt Disney Productions, who bought eight Model 200B oscillators (at $71.50 each) for use in testing the Fantasound stereophonic sound system for the movie Fantasia.
HP is acknowledged by Wired magazine as the producer of the world's first personal computer, in 1968, the Hewlett-Packard 9100A. HP called it a desktop calculator because, as Bill Hewlett said, "If we had called it a computer, it would have been rejected by our customers' computer gurus because it didn't look like an IBM. We therefore decided to call it a calculator and all such nonsense disappeared". The company earned global respect for a variety of products.
1. In 1992, the microprocessor industry was highly competitive. In this type of knowledge industry, the costs of design, development, and production costs were rising at a rapid pace. Although Intel had gained a substantial market share by consistently innovating and creating new products, imitations were becoming an enormous problem. Competitors were able to imitate Intel’s products with much lower production costs because they were able to skip expensive product life-cycle phases, such as development and marketing. Skipping these phases also allowed competitors to adapt the product features to more recent changes in demand. Yet another threat in the industry arose from a growing number of companies developing CPU’s that did not attempt compatibility with Intel products. In order to strengthen its competitive position, it is important that Intel continue to legally defend its intellectual property rights in order to reduce competition from imitators. Intel also must continue to aggressively spend on R&D, equipment and fabs to strengthen its process technology and production capacity.

SUN Microsystems Case Analysis Sun Microsystems had an extremely tough decision to make in regards to its procurement strategy. They had to decide if they were going to take on an “E-sourcing” or “dynamic bidding” auction-type strategy with making purchases from their suppliers. Taking on this type of procurement strategy would benefit Sun with cost-savings on procurements, but may jeopardize their supplier relationships and quality of inputs for Sun products. After reviewing the enclosed financial data for Sun from 1996-1999, it is apparent that some trends are consistent. Sun’s cost of goods sold has consistently been around half of their revenue for prior fiscal years, resulting in an approximate gross margin of 50%.
The internal parts of the HP-48SX consist mainly of a small CPU and its associated connections. These connections were made by soldering. A company like H-P, that offers such a large range of technological products, is facing growing pressures from other competitors that offer more specific solutions; such as companies that prefer producing tablets and phones, those that only manufacture and provide laptops such as Dell or those that have monopolized the software and operating industry such as Windows and Apple; and based on these pressures, H-P is being highly motivated to change by several acquisitions in many other fields and products; such as those focused on software security, cloud computing, analytics software as well as tablets, phones and laptops in order to beat such companies faster to market strategies. My report is on the company Hewlett – Packard (HP) which was founded in 1939. I mainly focused on the Personal Systems Group (PSG): business and consumers PCs mobile computing devices and workstations which is one of the major industries of HP. In order to succeed in the business industry a company needs to understand its customer’s needs and create wants for them. HP found out that the customer needed light weight, useful notebook PCs through its Research & Development (R&D) centre. Hence, it created a want; a New Commercial Notebook PC Compaq Evo Notebook N1015v which packs the power and performance necessary for mobility into a stylish design for only $899(US $). HP also finds out about its customer needs through online feedback forms and survey. Via that, HP was also able to understand that not everyone are able to use their products hence it has created this HP accessibility products which can be accessed by anyone including people with disabilities and age – limitations. Example of such product under the PSG industry is the Mobile Speak Pocket which was specially made for the visually impaired people. ( Refer To Exhibit 1a – 1c )

This purpose of this paper was to evaluate the financial statements of IBM Corporation during the past five years to assess the future profitability of the company. Unfortunately, this report only reflects up to four years, as appose to a five year analysis. I used Plaza College Library along with Queens Library to do my research. This helps me with the data base I needed to access and wasn’t able to at home. My professor helped me with my research; he helped me understand the things I didn’t understand. He also guided me to web pages that help me with my research. I used many search engines such as IBM company web page, Google, ProQuest, MSN Money, and Yahoo Finance. IBM web page was the best because most of my information came for the company web pages. Google was helpful because it help me find my company information that wasn’t on the web page. ProQuest is good for data base but it wasn’t helpful to my research. MSN money was very helpful I was able to get my 10k report and many other things. Yahoo Finance, I was able to get all my finance information without a problem. All the information I received, I was able to put in it in my research paper to create a 10 to 12 page research paper. In this paper I have applied knowledge of business concepts, information literacy techniques, and critical thinking.
In regards to business practices, incentives are common tool used in negotiations. With that being said, Intel, a technology conglomerate, gave huge incentives to its customers for using computer-chip. Many would argue that Intel was wrong, while others would say Intel business practices were fair game. Below is a detailed report, discussing Intel actions.
Although the Osborne Corporation's business practice may not have been the best, they are still responsible for introducing the world's first portable computer.
“The Dell Theory of Conflict Prevention,” is a theory that is approved by multiple famous authors. The theories main points are valuable and the theory should be looked upon more seriously. In Thomas Friedman’s essay, “The Dell Theory of Conflict Prevention,” he gives examples of how global supply chains would be constructive to promoting world peace. Friedman feels that if everyone is an ally to each other in some shape or form, then no one will want to engage in war. Madeline Albright would agree with Friedman’s theory according to her writings in “Faith and Diplomacy.” Albright felt that religion should play a factor in the diplomatic system of America, in order for us to maintain some kind of peace with other nations. Friedman and Albright both were looking for a solution to world peace. Albright would agree with this theory from the religious perspective. Appiah argued that an ideal global citizen would be essential to America, in his essays “Making conversation” and “The Primacy of Practice.” Appiah felt that people must have an understanding of each other in order to get along with each other. Both Appiah and Albright would agree with “The Dell Theory of Conflict Prevention.” “The Dell Theory stipulates: No two countries that are both part of a major global supply chain, like Dell’s, will ever fight a war against each other as long as they are both part of the same global supply chain”(Friedman 125).
Case Study of Dell Computer Corporation Introduction Michael Dell founded Dell Computer Corporation in 1984 with a simple vision and business concept – that personal computers can be built to order and sold directly to consumers. Michael believed his approach had two advantages: (i) by passing distributors and retail dealers eliminated the markups of resellers, and (ii) building to order greatly reduced the costs and risks associated with carrying large stocks of parts, components and finished goods. Its build-to-order and sell-direct approach proved appealing to growing numbers of customers in the mid 1990s as global PC sales rose to record levels. In 1998, it was already the 3rd manufacturer in the United States with a 12% share of PC market and a nearly 6% share worldwide. The company’s fastest growing market for the past several quarters was Europe.
