Herbology is the study of not only magical plants but mundane plants as well. In the first year of Herbology there have been several types of plants that have been examined and each have its own separate, unique properties, dangers, treatment, and uses. Herbology can be viewed as an art form if one were to view each plant as its own entity with different rules and way to care for the plant. Different plants are used for a variety of different reasons to healing, potion making, breeding, and even helping recognizing the particular wand wood being used in a duel. In medicine it is often important to look for a plant's temperament and toxicity in order to hypothesize the usefulness of a particular plant in a healing potion.
After having a basic understanding of why Herbology is so important and the proper steps to taking care of these plants, a person can begin to raise some plants of their own. Below are several notes of observations I found while observing plants in the lab. One could potentially note that how the each factor listed above is vital and how each plant clearly has its own identity.
Gillyweed grows in the Mediterranean Sea and grows 5cm-7cm. The palnt is moderately alkaline and consumes large amounts of water. Even though they require little sunlight, depending on how much water they intake, there is no limit to the amount of sunshine they take in. Gillyweed is used for a person to grow a temporary growth of gills and webs between the toes and fingers. I have not tested this myself but sources indicate that in fresh water this affect lasts for about an hour but can last up to three hours in salt water. The book “Milkweed” itself shows many signs of survival. Both literally, and figuratively. This novel describes what the Jews did to survive and how they survived. The theme of survival is represented by different objects. The author, Spinelli, uses many literary elements to describe and support the theme of survival. The main three are: setting (where and what time), symbols such as the plant Milkweed that represents a new hope, and conflicts (what is the fight/fighting in the story).
The theme of the book as it relates to the American Dream is those who take advantage by becoming covetous and acquisitive. The Clutters in this book are described as the ideal American Dream family. Herb Clutter is the head man of the house who makes sure that his family and financial situations are in order. This exhibit was interning to me to see all the different plant and to know that plants in the city unknown to most there are often edible, medicinal or even poisonous plants.
Global warming has taken planet earth by storm. Over 1 million animal species have gone extinct, and many more are predicted to follow. In the past century, temperatures have increased 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit due to humans’ high outpouring of greenhouse gases. This change has resulted in rising sea levels, which leads to habitat loss and climate change. This affects not only animals, but human beings, as well. If we don’t start an effort to save this plant, who knows how long it will last. Earth is a Marvelous place that’s a privilege to call home; it’s about time we start treating it that way.

On Saturday November 1st, a peer and I attended Green Seattle Partnership’s “Autumn’s Fury” Work Party from 10am to 2pm at East Park entry on the corner of 21st Avenue East and East Interlaken Boulevard. Upon arrival we were instructed by Kari Olson to cut and pull non-native invasive species of plants, which included the Himalayan blackberries, evergreen blackberries, and Clematis. We were also very careful as to not harm the native species - especially the native blackberry that closely resembled the non-native blackberries, other than the fact that its stem had more of a silver hue. These invasive plants were found growing over and around many of the native trees and shrubs taking up a lot of space and sunlight. Society is programed to feel very healthy, but if when actual regarding the statistics it would be surprising to the contrary. The modern healthcare system is flawed in its basic theology. It focuses on treating the main symptoms and not treating the root cause and preventing illnesses. To return to a healthier society, the medical care system needs that focuses more on holistic or the all of the systems that make up someone 's body. The needs to be a shift in the way medical professionals treat their patients it would create a superior society.

The sight of these gardens were truly remarkable in a time where design would settle for nothing less of such. In the lab exercise regarding plant structure and function, we examined slides containing the different kinds of roots (monocot, dicot). We labeled the parts and pointed out the different roles of each in the plant structure. Also, we examined monocot stems and dicot stems in order to familiarize ourselves with its external and internal structures. We sketched and labeled the parts of the stem and looked closely at the positions of each part. In the last part of the lab, we classified leaves into different kinds according to their leaf venation, bases of leaves, and apices of leaves. As an additional exercise, we sketched 20 animals and classified them according to phylum and class. We were also able to discover the scientific and common names of the animals. Overall, the exercises we did enabled us to familiarize ourselves with plant structure thus, gaining a better understanding for plant life and its importance.

Invasive alien species are disrupting and changing the normal ecological functions of biomes, ecosystems, and the biosphere as a whole (CBD, 2009). They are a threat to biodiversity and can cause damage to, or even eradicate native species which natural cycles and other organisms depend on. While disrupting energy flow, food chains, and shaking the structure of ecosystems to the core, invasive species create not only ecological, but also a whole host of social, economical, and health issues that affect the livelihood of almost every organism on earth, including humans (CBD, 2009).
