When Edgar Allen Poe wrote “THe Pit And The Pendulum” he was writing out of pure fear. This story uses three different types of horror elements to give it a creepy background. One horror element that Poe uses is isolation. In the story the main character is locked away in this dark basement. He can’t see a thing an he’s by himself. The main character has to realize that no one is going to save him. He gets very alone down in the dark basement learning to walk around without seeing. Suspense is the feeling of uncertainty or excitement, in waiting for an outcome or decision. Edgar Allan Poe uses suspense in his story “Masque of the Red Death” by using objects and great descriptive detail. Poe’s story is about a prince that tries to escape from the inevitable. He tries to lock himself away from the ‘red death’ and has a masquerade ball that doesn’t end happily. Prince and all of his guests die inside or around the seventh apartment room. Have you ever watched a movie and been dissatisfied, because it was not similar to its book? There are multiple movies that seem as if they are their own story, for they don't resemble their book at all. For example, “The Pit and the Pendulum.” by Edgar Allen Poe. He, himself would not approve of the film that follows his story. For one thing, the storyline was no where near to being like his book. Another reasoning is that he wrote based of one man not multiple people. And finally, he wouldn’t of approved of the art on the walls in the room with the pit and pendulum. These are the reasonings of why Poe would not appreciate the film.
Like many stories written by Edgar Allan Poe, “The Pit and the Pendulum” creates an eerie atmosphere with an unknown character. This story focuses mainly on the distinct detail on the surroundings that seem to enhance the senses due to the character’s current state of blindness in the present environment. With little information presented of the character’s reason in being there, the experience seems to be the main focus of this short story. “Poe places the narrator of “The Pit and the Pendulum” in just such a crucible of painful sensations, which force him to grapple with an ultimate state of horror.” (Kent Ljungquist) As stated in an analysis by Kent Ljungquist Poe does place the narrator in this threshold of fear ,but interesting enough in this story compared to his other works seems to revolve around the sense of hope.
Poe creates a dark and tense atmosphere in the Pen and the Pendulum by starting the book out with the narrator receiving a death sentence from the court for an unknown crime. Poe uses a lot of suspense in this story. In the Fall of the House of Usher his atmosphere is gloomy and dark. By making the atmosphere like that, this creates imagery so vivid to the reader which helps lead to a sense of emotion while reading this story.

In the Story The Pit and the Pendulum, the narrator explains that he has been sentenced to death by the Inquisition (the institutionalized persecution of all Protestants and heretical Catholics by the Catholic government in 15th- and 16th-century Spain). The reader however must not get Poe confused with the narrator because the narrator is the one telling the story while Poe is the author of the story. The narrator starts his story by saying he is sick unto death (180). The narrator here is trying to suggest that this sickness is the normal position of a human being; everyone is mortal. He recognizes this in the beginning. "The Pit and the Pendulum" is a story of torture. The punishments that the narrator is about to receive illustrate the power of humans to inflict pain and suffering on others. In addition, though, this story shows that the worst kind of torture is that of uncertainty and fear. Once the narrator understands that he will die from falling into the pit, it is no longer as cruel a punishment as the Inquisitors want to give him. Therefore, each punishment entails some element of pain, but, more importantly, a great deal of mental anguish before death.
The short story is generally a study in human terror. Furthermore, the author explains Poe use of a particular style and technique, to not only create the mood of mystery, but to cause the reader to feel sympathy for the narrator. This short story is about a man who is so disturbed by another man’s eye, it causes him to go mad. He obsesses over how he can get rid of the “vulture eye” and finally comes to the conclusion that he must kill the man. The story is suspenseful and disturbing, much like most of Poe’s works. Poe often uses repetition to put emphasis on certain actions in this story to emphasize the man’s obsession. For example, while the narrator is opening a lantern, he says, “So I opened it --you cannot imagine how stealthily, stealthily --until, at length a simple dim ray, like the thread of the spider, shot from out the crevice and fell full upon the vulture eye,” putting emphasis on how carefully he opened the lantern in order to not wake the sleeping man. The precision and caution the narrator uses while planning his murder gives the reader the idea that he has gone insane. When the narrator begins to hear the man’s heart beat after he had dismembered him and buried him under the floorboards, he says, “I felt that I must scream or die! and now --again! --hark! louder! louder! louder! louder!” showing a deep fear inside of him that the man may still be alive. His desire to be rid of the eye is so great, he goes into an intense hysteria. All of his works include something dark and are very suspenseful. Death, torture, and gut wrenching horror are all characteristics of the short story the Pit and the Pendulum. Written by Edgar Allen Poe in his waning years, the story has kind of a dark romanticism with evil giving it an eerie feeling. Poe wrote only a few more short stories afterward, and those stories were increasingly more gruesome. However, due to the descriptive language, this particular story leaves the reader with a dark feeling. Many aspects of Poe's stories after the Pit and the Pendulum involved some sort of torture and torment to either the protagonist or someone close to them. This story also utilizes a lot of symbolism. For example, one could view it as the suffering of one man at the hands of another. Then follow his progression into purgatory with the pendulum serving as his way to work off his sins. Followed by the turning point where eventually the protagonist rises into what one could imagine as heaven when the angelic French soldiers free him and show him the light while leaving the dungeon after an unknown amount of time. Although these are marvelous examples of symbolism in the story, Poe's use of another means to show symbolism seems more suited to the story itself. In The Pit and the Pendulum, the author uses torment and torture to depict the immorality of Spanish inquisitors, who maimed, tortured, and killed prisoners during the Spanish Inquisition, as well as the pits representation of hell.

In these three stories like most of Poe's stories they deal with the deep, dark, psychological side of the human brain. In Poe's short stories “The Cask of Amontillado”, “The Tell-Tale Heart” and “The Pit and the Pendulum”, Poe use three common motifs; death, fear or terror, and madness.
