Human resources describe both the people who work for the organization and the department responsible for managing resources to the staff. The term started in the 1960s when the value of labor relations began to garner attention and when notions such as motivation, organizational behavior, and selection assessments began. Human resources management focuses on a number of things. In healthcare human resources are critical in order to provide the highest quality of care and the strategies are greatly needed to achieve the best outcomes from and access to health care around the world. Today’s HR team is more focused on adding value to the strategic utilization of employees and ensure that programs impact the organization in a positive and measurable way. These roles include recruiting and staffing, retaining the staff, compensation and benefits, learning and training the ever-changing laws in healthcare, employee relations, and organization development. They handle the hiring and firing and locates temporary employees when needed. HR also manages the lines of communication between all levels to better manage personnel. The HR department handles workplace safety and sanitation and ensures that all employees are compliant. Recruiting is the selection of potential and qualified candidates based on a particular job. The ultimate goal in this process is to attract the most qualified applicants. Before the recruitment process can start, a plan must be put in to place. This also depends on the organization’s budget. Recruitment and selection is a very important function because it has to ultimately reduce costs of mistakes like hiring candidates that are incompetent, unmotivated, or under qualified. If an underqualified candidate is hired there are more costs with hiring and retraining another candidate. This can be an expensive process. This can also frustrate the existing employees with the retraining on-the-job skills. Everyone hates to be short-handed and hiring incapable candidates causes a high turnover. The quality of the healthcare that the organization provides is only as good as its people. Once positions have been posted human resources will sort through applicants and review and consideration begins. They narrow the applicants down. During this process, human resources will schedule interviews. Sometime before or after the interview HR can use testing and other methods to narrow down the selection.
