What is the most common response in my gym class when the teacher asks us to do fifty squat, twenty-five push-ups, and run laps around the gym? “I can’t do it.” This famous statement is most commonly said by students in reaction to strenuous physical activities inside and out of school. Physical activity prior to school could cure these negative thoughts and enable a more positive outlook on physical activities for middle and high school students. Many students, including myself, feel anxious prior to doing a tough workout, before a math test, or waiting to be called in for an audition. It can make everyday tasks easier and can greatly improve mental wellness. Physical activity before school can make everyday tasks easier because the students will be stronger and healthier. When collecting groceries from the car or walking home from school, we are using muscles that could be largely improved by physical activity. Physical activity prior to school can make most everyday tasks easier because the students will be stronger and therefore, it will be easier to perform everyday tasks that need the use of the heart, biceps, quadriceps, and many other muscles. Moreover, physical activity can improve quality of life because it can improve the students’ mental health. Exercising releases endorphins which reduces stress, wards off depression, and can improve body-image. Endorphins trigger a positive feeling in the body, similar to that of most pain medications. For example, the feeling that follows a run or workout is often described as "euphoric." That feeling, known as a "runner's high," can be accompanied by a positive energizing, outlook on life and improved body image. This euphoric feeling can ward off depression, stress, and anxiety because when people feel happier, they tend to worry less and become more optimistic. A college campus is nothing without a gym. College sports, and cultural events take place in the T.M. Elmore Gym on Alabama A&M’s campus. This gym is located on the west side of A&M’s campus between Louis Crews stadium and Dr. Ernest L. Knight West Campus dorms. This building has made a large impact on the culture of the school considering that the gym is home to sports teams, classrooms, pep rallies, guest speakers and convocations.
The book begins by explaining how important exercise and being active is to our health and well-being. The author then transitions into a story about Naperville Central High School. This high school was in the forefront of a revolutionary new concept that involved vigorous exercise of its students instead of a traditional gym class. This new approach stimulated new research on the brain, and the effects of exercise on the well being of our body and minds. After the introduction of the new fitness programs, the school’s students showed drastic increases in standardized tests, and on normal tests as well.
Exercise and the act of any bodily motion requires chemistry to power all of the necessary moving parts. In fact, recent research has found a direct correlation between intelligence and physical fitness, especially in children under 16 years old and elderly persons (Pica 64). In a study conducted by F. L. Martens, academic scores, attitudes, and fitness were improved when a third of the school day was dedicated to recess. Another study study found that at least five hours of physical activity resulted in substantially higher academic achievement in the core subjects (Pica 63).
Our table is dismissed. I head back to gym with a full stomach, something that shouldn’t happen. Third block is the lunch block and the eighth grade special block. This shouldn’t happen and as principle the first change that would be in immediate effect would amend the schedule to be specials during first, second, and fourth block. This will cause improvements in health with gym being at least an hour away from lunch for the eighth grade; dietary habits considering people eat as minimal food as possible to preserve their stomach, and enthusiasm because students will see any change to the current schedule as a robust change.
