The Mindsets’ Influence on Motivation
According to Dweck, C.S, researcher in the field of motivation, “More and more research is showing that our brains change constantly with learning and experience and that this takes place throughout our lives” (Dweck 1). It make people connect to intelligence how much they posses, and how to change amount of intelligence. In fact, some students think that the intelligence is fixed, and other students believe that the intelligence can be changed. Therefore, it causes two different mindsets, fixed mindset and growth mindset. In fact, teachers and parents often praise children for their intelligence or effort. For the intelligence, students with fixed mindset do not gradually want to learn because they think they do not need to learn, and the talent has already represented their ability and success. For the effort, students with growth mindset would like to face challenging task and setbacks because the encouragement can make them continually improve their ability. A researcher in the field of motivation reports that “Actually, their performance improved over time such that, by the end, they were performing substantially better than the intelligence-praised children on this IQ test” (Dweck 3). Actually, students with fixed mindset will get more difficult problem and then gradually lose confidence if they are praised for their intelligence. These students keep studying hard whatever their level of intelligence. Although sometimes they have to fail, they still study more and succeed next time. A researcher in the field of motivation discusses that “In short, students with this growth mindset believe that intelligence potential that can be realize through learning. As a result, confronting challenges, profiting from mistakes, and persevering in the face of setbacks become ways of getting smarter” (Dweck 1). Growth mindset make students more motivated to learn because they want to develop their intelligence.
