In completing this essay, an opportunity was provided to identify and address the logistics of creating and facilitating a group. More specifically the essay will entail, “A description of the population with which you might like to build a group and an explanation of the type of group you might build with this population. An explanation of the concerns that might be addressed for this population in that group and a description of which cultural structures and values may oppress, marginalize, alienate, create, or enhance privilege and power for this group. Typically, teenage mothers are females between the ages of 13-19 who became pregnant before reaching legal adulthood. Within this population I inspire to teach the fundamentals of practicing self-sufficiency being it is essential in successfully providing for their child. The primary focus of the group would be life skills training, sex education, and peer support. Life skills would consist of effective teaching communication skills, budgeting, stress management, nutrition, financial literacy, and high school/GED competition. Sex education would inform of abstinence, sexual transmitted diseases, birth control, reproductive rights and responsibilities, reproductive health, and human sexual behavior. Intervention Skills Needed For Working with This Group Social workers utilize various intervention models in obtaining desired outcomes for their clients. The following intervention skills could all be used in group; conflict resolution, modeling and coaching, team building, confrontation, consultation, coordination, and using structure. The primary skills one would recommend is modeling and coaching. Social workers may find modeling helpful in a number of situations, including teaching new skills, showing clients alternative methods for resolving problems, and helping clients develop a repertoire of responses to problematic situations((Kirst-Ashman & Hull, 2015). At their current state of being a teenage mother, it would be beneficial for the social worker to model the importance of self-sufficiency and steps needed to maintain compliance of independence.
