There are over nine million Greek members nationally, that is why many freshmen have this question on their mind when they go to college, “Should I rush a fraternity or a sorority, and what are the benefits?” (Fraternity Advisor) Greek organizations are very popular on college campuses, they are organizations that are identified by Greek letters, and typically support a certain organization that helps better the campus and community. Fraternities are for men and sororities are for women, once a student has rushed and been accepted into the particular organization they will then have to pay dues which will go towards the fees, operating costs, and their social functions. Did you know that many successful men and women have participated in Greek organizations throughout their college years? Many people that have participated in Greek organizations have gone on to be very successful. Former President George W. Bush was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon at Yale University. (Besque) Delta Kappa Epsilon has dated back to 1883 when Edward Griffin Bartlett founded it. If students want to rush this particular fraternity there is certain criteria that must be met, they must have academic excellence, a high moral character, and a self respecting character. (DKE) “Nine million college students are members of a Greek organization and whether they join to make friends, build resumes, to go to parties or to learn leadership skills, they each have an incentive to change some aspect of their life.” (Examining the Benefits of Greek Life) Allowing these Greek organizations shows that successful people with positive values and goals do come out of Greek organizations. Recently the media has brought attention to the common stereotypes that Greek organizations are known for. Greek organizations are commonly known for being sexist, racist, and out of control. That is why many will disagree with colleges supporting Greek organizations because of the constant negative portrayal the media throws out there. Recently fraternities in particular have been shown in the media particularly for hazing. All the students who have been victims of this have brought it to the attention of the campus police and justice has been served to them by law and the college.
