What is it like to live in a world that revolves around money and wealth? What does it mean to be grateful for how fortunate you are? Nick Carraway has a mindset that not everyone is as fortunate as him from the start of the book, The Great Gatsby. The reason Nick has walked through life with this great mindset is due to his father. The things someone tells a young one at a young age can have a huge impact on the rest of that person’s life. For example, the following quote: “In my younger more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice that I’ve been turning over in my mind ever since. ‘Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone,’ he told me, ‘just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had’” (Fitzgerald,

One commonly agreed upon notion is a world at peace; this can happen when you’re not quick on judging in life and being open-minded. In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby provides the reader with a unique outlook on the life of the newly rich. Gatsby is an enigma and a subject of great curiosity, furthermore, he is content with a lot in life until he strives too hard. His obsession with wealth, his lonely life and his delusion allow the reader to sympathize with him. Initially, Gatsby stirs up sympathetic feelings because of his obsession with wealth.
During the time in our country's history called the roaring twenties, society had a new obsession, money. Just shortly after the great depression, people's focus now fell on wealth and success in the economic realm. Many Americans would stop at nothing to become rich and money was the new factor in separation of classes within society. Wealth was a direct reflection of how successful a person really was and now became what many people strived to be, to be rich. Wealth became the new stable in the "American dream" that people yearned and chased after all their lives. In the novel entitled the great Gatsby, the ideals of the so called American dream became skewed, as a result of the greediness and desires of the main characters to become rich and wealthy. These character placed throughout the novel emphasize the true value money has on a persons place in society making wealth a state of mind.

A well known novel in American Literature is The Great Gatsby which displays an example of a tragic hero. The author of the book, F. Scott Fitzgerald, portrayed an example of a tragic hero through the main character of the novel named Jay Gatsby. In the book Gatsby tries to accomplish the American Dream by gaining wealth and doing everything in his power to be with the love his life Daisy Buchanan. His whimsical ways granted him wealth and allowed him to be in the arms of his lover Daisy but, it also leads him to death. Jay Gatsby can be considered a tragic hero because he has a tragic flaw and because his misfortune was not wholly deserved.

In the book The Great Gatsby there is an obvious line dividing the haves and the have not’s. that line is the amount of money one has or has inherited, which in Mr. Gatsby’s case is quite a sum. A common occurrence is the negligence of Gatsby’s invitation, and inviting oneself over no matter his wishes (for the social publicity). The narrator acquaints himself with the fact that his only value to Gatsby was a connection to an old friend, rich just as Gatsby or so we think. The message that I think that this book is trying to get across is that back then morals were so loose for the fortuned that they consider having a lot of money as success, and leads us in the end to realize that the rich are not happy with what they have achieved.

What is the American dream? The American Dream is the reason why people live and come to America. In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby” the novel is all about the American dream. Fitzgerald expresses the American dream with the terms “old money” and “new money”. Old money meaning you were born rich, while new money means you became rich on your own. Throughout the story there are many difficulties and benefits of living in America where society is all about money.
Gatsby realizes that life of the high class demands wealth to become priority; wealth becomes his superficial goal overshadowing his quest for love. He establishes his necessity to acquire wealth, which allows him to be with Daisy. The social elite of Gatsby's time sacrifice morality in order to attain wealth. Tom Buchanan, a man from an "enormously wealthy" family, seems to Nick to have lost all sense of being kind (Fitzgerald 10). Nick describes Tom's physical attributes as a metaphor for his true character when remarking that Tom had a "hard mouth and a supercilious manner...arrogant eyes had established dominance over his face...always leaning aggressively forward...a cruel body...[h]is speaking voice...added to the impression of fractiousness he conveyed" (Fitzgerald 11). The wealth Tom has inherited causes him to become arrogant and condescending to others, while losing his morals. Rather than becoming immoral from wealth as Tom has, Gatsby engages in criminal activity as his only path to being rich. His need for money had become so great that he "was in the drug business" (Fitzgerald 95). Furthermore, he lies to Nick about his past in order to cover up his criminal activity. Gatsby claims to others that he has inherited his wealth, but Nick discovers "[h]is parents were shiftless and unsuccessful farm people" (Fitzgerald 104). Gatsby enters a world where money takes precedence over moral integrity. Materialism has already overshadowed a portion of his spiritual side. A quest for true love is doomed for failure in the presence of immorality. Once wealth has taken priority over integrity, members of the high social class focus on immediate indulgences, rather than on long-term pleasures of life such as love.
Jay Gatsby is a very wealthy man. Although he was born into a poorer family he worked hard and it paid off. He throws lavish parties for countless people, yet he has no real friends. He buys very expensive things and entertains large groups of society because of his desire for something greater. He is so blinded by his luxurious possessions that he does not see that money cannot buy love or happiness. Although Nick realizes that Gatsby is involved in secret business dealings and he is fixated on money, he is a good, loyal man at heart. Before Gatsby dies Nick says “They’re a rotten crowd.... You’re worth the whole damn bunch put together” (Fitzgerald 162).
Nick Carraway is the only character worth knowing in The Great Gatsby. He is living in East Egg with the rich and powerful people. He is on the guest lists to all of their parties and yet he is the person most worthy of attending such parties because he is well bread and his family is certainly not poor. “Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone, just remember that all people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had.” (Ch1, P1). These words were taught to Nick by his father showing the qualities that a man with goals and values would have in a place where goals and values was no existent. His Judgmental eye for character and guts of using them when desired makes him more interesting. He has a greatest fear that he will be all alone by himself.
