The Great Gatsby, the 2013 movie version, was directed by Baz Luhrmann. Portraying Jay Gatsby and Nick Carraway, the narrator of the film, are Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire. Daisy and Tom Buchanan, Jordan Baker, and Myrtle and George Wilson are played by Carey Mulligan,Joel Edgerton, Elizabeth Debicki, Isla Fisher, and Jason Clarke. The Great Gatsby is set in New York City, more specifically Long Island, in the 1920’s. The film does an outstanding job of presenting the story to the viewer, not only with the help of the actor’s magnificent portrayals but also with visuals and music. The Great Gatsby, narrated by Nick Carraway during his time in an asylum, is centered around the rich of New York City after the Great War. Jay Gatsby, one of the newly rich of Long Island, is alluring and interesting to Nick. In the summer, Nick attends Gatsby’s glamorous parties and learns the truth about the mysterious billionaire. Nick is merely an observer of the events that transpired that tumultuous summer, he feels that he is both there in the moment but at the same time Nick is not there truly. However, an even more vital theme to the story is the romance. Daisy and Gatsby’s relationship going back five years is both genuine and self-destructing, causing sorrow to all parties taking part or knowing of the affair. Gatsby’s vivid imagination and his demands are the forces that drive the pair apart. Gatsby yearns for everything to go back to what it was like in the past and imagines a perfect world for him and Daisy, which is why Gatsby pushes for Daisy to leave Tom, but she breaks.
