The Movie, Of Gods and Men, is a movie about Trappist monks, young and old, living in a monastery in Algeria. The government at the time was corrupt and people like terrorists were starting to rebel and take over, killing thousands of people and causing chaos. Throughout all this, the trappist monks continued to stay in their monastery, even after encountering the terrorists and being asked to leave by the government. One monk in particular, Brother Christophe, had lost sight of God had to overcome many obstacles to find his purpose at the monastery.
Jesus plays a huge role in Christophe’s life because he is constantly in prayer and in service to God. Even though he has to overcome obstacles in his faith journey that distant him from God, in the end he ends up closer to God than ever before. At one point, Christophe held his position on leaving very firmly; he was leaving and going back to France. He even states, “Dying here…here and now…Does it serve a purpose? I don't know. I feel like I'm going mad.” This quote gives us information about where he was at the time in his faith. He didn't know his purpose at the monastery and started to question God. In the beginning of the movie, we see him mostly on the farm collecting crops. As things progress and hard times come, we see him frustrated and impatient with his brothers and God. He started to wonder why God wasn't there for them, even after they devoted their lives towards him. By the end he finds God and figures out his calling in life. He even states, “Let God set the table here. For everyone. Friends and enemies.” This illustrates that Christophe has welcomed God back into his life and that anyone can come to the monastery, even the terrorists.
