More than just a simple thriller, Get Out (2017), directed by Jordan Peele, focuses on an interracial relationship between Rose Armitage (Allison Williams) and Chris Washington (Daniel Kaluuya). In history, there has always been a feud between white and black people, so this film raises the concept of race. Jordan Peele says: “ I was thinking of the gender and racial civil rights movements in terms of one another… In the beginning, we're in the Obama presidency and race was not supposed to be discussed. It was almost like, if you talk about race, it will appear and we're past that now. He is constantly hypnotized as she stirs the tea in her famous blue and white tea cup. In these scenes, the spoon circling inside of the cup is the only noise we hear and we are captivated as Chris is being hypnotized. I think that Peele chose to show an extreme close up of the cup because it is vital to Chris’s sanity as he deals with this unusual family. When Chris is locked up in the basement, he is helpless. I think that Peele decided to make this scene symmetrical because this type of composition makes us focus on the main subject, which is Chris. We follow him as he is held captive. We see the recurring stirring of the tea and him being tied to the chair. This ties back to the idea of slavery. As Chris tugs on the cotton, we are reminded of slavery because slaves used to pick cotton and provide it for their owners. As Rose’s father, Dean (Bradley Whitford) proceeds in his surgical procedures, we can see the subject from a high angle; portraying that Dean is more powerful than the “patient.” As we look down at the subject, there is top lighting, allowing us to focus on the procedure that Dean is conducting.
