Gatsby's Obsession With Social Media

In The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald portrays Gatsby’s obsession with utopia and refusal to accept reality by simply stating that “It had gone….beyond everything. He had thrown himself into it with a creative passion” (Fitzgerald). By doing so, he describes the lasting effects of Gatsby’s obsession; the mere thought of something grows more appealing than the actual thing itself, which results in Gatsby never being able to accept the world around him. For Generation Z this obsession has become social media. Much like Gatsby, Generation Z’s obsession with social media has made them expect a utopian society, which in turn makes real life seem lack-luster and mundane. Social Media has evolved from a simple system of communication into an addictive force. Generation Z wakes up in the morning and immediately checks Instagram, they check Snapchat between classes, and scroll on Twitter right before bed. No longer do people wake up to see the sky, instead they wake up to see the cold, created world of social media. Every picture a calculated move to portray the world as utopian. To reach this level of happiness they seek more likes as if one more follower, one more like would finally allow them to experience bliss. …show more content…

No one wants the world to see them during their worst moments, these moments have always been the ones that we have tried to hide. Rather than portray ourselves in a negative light, when we have control we want to portray ourselves positively, creating the utopian reality present in social media. It only makes sense that we would want to do so. Yet this has had a profound effect on Generation Z. Surrounded by images of people being happy exploring and enjoying life has left Gen Z wanting the same thing, without realizing that perfection is unattainable.
