Frank Darabont's The Shawshank Redemption
The movie the Shawshank Redemption, based on the book by Steven King, I believe is one of the best movies ever made. The portrayal of prison life in the movie is the best I have seen and a star-studded cast including Morgan Freeman supports the characters and brings to life the everyday struggles of life behind bars. In this paper I will relate topics from class to the movie and discuss information we have learned through out the semester.
One of the best things about this movie is its portrayal of prison life. There are many movies that deal with prison and the life of prisoners while incarcerated, but Shawshank I feel does the best job of giving you a real feeling of what prison life is all about. Shawshank brings forth many situations that occur in prisons such as corruption, the circulation of contraband, educational programs, government funding, time in the yard, prison jobs and concept of institutionalization.
Throughout an inmate’s stay in prison, they have to deal with many situations that may arise during their sentence. Inmates have to deal with racism, interracial fighting, gangs and homosexual acts to name a few, not including the stress of serving out their sentence one day at a time. There are many scenes that show the inmates out in the yard, having a catch or lifting, doing anything they can to make the stay more comfortable. Society can be very cruel; hopes and dreams can become reality or vanish away into the shivering winds. It is important to maintain hope when life is crumbling around you and freedom is what humans strive for in order to execute what they please during their existence on earth. Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption by Stephen King, is a clear example of freedom combined with hope, illustrated by the characters of Andy Dufresne and Red. Andy, like Red, never loses hope of leaving prison; furthermore they gain a sense of freedom when departing from Shawshank. Having beliefs, in addition to fighting for what you believe is right are virtues that help you to strive for success which ultimately, lets you reach for freedom and hope.

After reading the book I have gained a new understanding of what inmates think about in prison. Working in an institution, I have a certain cynical attitude at times with inmates and their requests. Working in a reception facility, this is a facility where inmates are brought in from the county jails to the state intake facility, we deal with a lot of requests and questions. At times, with the phone ringing off the hook from family members and inmates with their prison request forms, you get a little cynical and tired of answering the same questions over and over. As I read the book I begin to understand some of the reason for the questions. Inmate(s) now realize that the officers and administrative personnel are in control of their lives. They dictate with to get up in the morning, take showers, eat meals, go to classes, the need see people for different reason, when to exercise and when to go to bed. The lost of control over their lives is a new experience for some and they would like to be able to adjust to this new lost of freedom. Upon understanding this and in reading the book, I am not as cynical as I have been and try to be more patient in answering questions. So in a way I have changed some of my thinking and understanding more of prison life.
Adams’ research into the Angola prison has given insight to the different races inside prisons. Through her exploration, it has become evident there are more people of color behind bars, than white people (Adams, 104). Analysis of execution has proven that more men than women are executed. Adams’ highlighted in her research that when the museum at Angola opened its showcased eight six mug shots of men and only one of a woman who were executed (Adams, 101). Over her research of the prison and the rodeo, Adams’ reveals that the large inequality of economic power within the prison system. Investigation on the inmate cowboys’ winnings and profit from their “hobby crafts”, show that it is funneled back into the prisons economy, when prisoners purchase cigarettes, food, and gifts for their family (Adams, 97). Over the course of the article there were many interesting facts and images shared with the readers. Adams’ in depth account of the rodeo as well as the execution chambers were interesting. However, what stood out the most in the article was how the inmates desired to take part in such a gruesome event. Prisoners explained that being apart of the rodeo offers a moment of freedom from their sentence (Adams, 99). The idea of the rodeo being a release for inmates is an interesting notion. The time spent in the right is not only providing entertainment for outsiders, but also fosters an environment where those who are held captive can achieve a brief moment of freedom. Although many of the inmates endure physical pain in their time in the ring, they believe it eases their mind from their sentence. The film portrays Andy spending nearly two decades in Shawshank State Prison, a surreal house of correction in Maine and his friendship with Red, a fellow inmate, which gradually develops over the years. Consequently the three reasons that the director wanted to produce this movie are to reveal hope, despair and integrity. There are so many children in poverty and a family's structure can effect the outcome. Most of the people who are at the poverty level need some type of help to overcome the obstacles. Prison has held a place in our society for centuries. Throughout history, prisoners have been incapacitated in a vicious environment and that still rings true today. A person’s experience in prison can greatly vary. It may be a place of solace for those that are homeless because they have three meals and a bed to sleep in every night. People are imperceptibly influenced by the mass media that self-identity can be shaped and formed through consuming specific products. Therefore it can be said, fashion is an important element of identity formation. Young people are commonly feared of being seen as outdated and seek for acceptance from the peers and the society. According to Erikson’s theory of personal social and personal development adolescences and young adults see peers as a critical influence, acceptance of peers can lead to security of identity and self-esteem. This essay is going to examine how young people shape or form their identities through the consumption of fashion. Youths tend to shape their identity through different styles or ways of dressing, differentiate themselves from others and express their feeling or identity through fashion.
The mass media uses prison life as the source for movies and television shows. Over the years there have been many movies written about prison but the most prominent in my mind is Frank Darabont’s, The Shawshank Redemption. Throughout the film there are many examples of the falsities of prison life. There are some elements of truth but they are out weighed by the misconceptions. Numerous prisoners are allowed to walk around the prison and the prison yard with no guards in sight. In actuality there are always guards around, especially on the inside. What I see in the future for this problem is that the fluctuating trend will continue it’ll rise and it will fall depending on the many outside factors. I do not think poverty is something that can be predicted and prevented, it is unpredictable because there are too many moving parts. I am not surprised by poverty now that I analyzed this I still feel the same poverty is something that cannot be solved. I agree with the functionalist perspective I believe it serves a purpose, in its own ways. The best solution I think is making more jobs it did some good before maybe if we continue to make more jobs the problem will keep lessening.

A lot of people in the world are in poverty today. Various countries are trying to minimize the poverty level by the government subsidizing most of the things in the country such as education, food, and health services. Also, factories have started production goods in surplus. This excess production will lead to deflation because when there is an excess supply of goods and services, the price of the good or service will fall making the people pay less for more. More so, some countries have started maximizing the use of fertilizers in farms in order to increase agricultural production which will reduce poverty. Here, poverty will be looked at broadly and different plans put forth by different people to eliminate poverty will be discussed.
When I ask my dad why he started smoking he would say to be cool. Millions of people started smoking not knowing what would happen to them in years later. Most smokers like my dad have tried to stop but have failed. There are lots of side effects besides smelling bad. If you have children there is a potential to pass second hand smoking that may lead to the same diseases has the smoker can contracted. Most smokers don’t even know the makeup of a cigarette and what those chemical can do to you. Nicotine is an insecticide and interferes with the nervous systems. When a smoker smokes the nicotine, it reaches the brain faster about 7 seconds. This stimulates cells in the brain and blocks the nerve impulses.
