Food insecurity
Growth of food production in Vietnam has increased food availability and assured food security for the whole country. Food availability satisfied not only self-sufficiency but also had surplus for export. Basically, Vietnam eradicated its acute hunger problem of the post-war period and achieved food self-sufficiency at a national level and contributing to the world food security by exporting 5 to 8 million tons of rice every year. According to a report on food security of the countries in Asia and the Pacific of FAO (2016), the proportion of undernourished population of Vietnam has decreased 79% in the period of 1990-1992 to 2014-2016, achieving the fastest rate in the region, along with Thailand and Myanmar . Between 2000 and 2015, the per capita food availability in Vietnam increased from 2310 to 2770 calories per day, placing the country among the top half dozen developing countries for that indicator. The lack of food nutrition balance is more severe in the poor who cannot afford costly nutritious food although it is available. In addition, at local levels, the lack of diversification in agriculture production can also lead to unbalanced food consumption of the local people.
In Vietnam, malnutrition among children under five remains a public health priority. The most recent statistics show a slow but steady decline in malnutrition rates but it remains a burden in the country and may account for 24.6 per cent of under-fives are stunted, 14.1 per cent are underweight and 6.4 per cent are wasted (2015 NNS
