In this paper I will argue that understanding the context of a film is vital for a more in-depth understanding of it and I will accomplish this through a deep analysis of the following films: Flowers of War, Edge of Heaven, Battleship Potemkin, and the Big Heat. Additionally not only knowing the historical, social, and political background of a film and how the ideas in this film were form,but also how this film affected the society and the point of view of individuals,because after all film is not only affected by the context in which it is created ,but the film also affects individuals are catalyst for change in societies and cultures. I do understand that there is merit in watching a film with a blank slate and not knowing the context of the film,but I feel as though one gains a lot more from the film after knowing the historical, social, and political background of a film ,because then one is able to pick up on more of the subtle in films that make them great, especially themes and symbols.
