Twilight of a Woman’s Soul is a film directed by Evgini Bauer in 1913 and is about a rich young and beautiful woman named Vera and her dark secret. In the scene that this paper analyzes the main character Vera is explaining to her husband-to-be, Prince Sergei, how she killed a man that raped her a few years in the past. In the middle of the scene, there is a flashback to when Vera is raped by Maximus, a poor person someone she is trying to help. Both the argument and the flashback are shot with one camera angle in one room but they remain some of the most powerful parts in the entire movie. The director uses of various forms of montage, camera angles, and mise-en-scène to add to the level of of complexity of this seemingly basic scene. In the shot of Vera’s room, the camera is in a fixed position. This the fixed camera position gives the viewer adequate time to view the entire room, the clothes the characters are wearing, and the facial expressions the character. The camera angle makes it almost seem like the viewer is sitting in the room with the characters watching the argument between the prince and Vera unfold. When the scene flashes back, the transition is cut very sharply, catching the viewer by surprise. The director Bauer uses mainly tonal montage to further emphasize the seriousness of Vera’s secret. The flashback is an example of tonal montage. The quick flashback is an emotional montage that gives the viewer insight of what Vera’s big secret is and why she might not be the most innocent woman. Throughout the film we know that Vera was raped but we don’t ever see what exactly happened. This flashback solidifies that Vera is not this innocent woman that The Prince portrays her as.
