Nov. 2,2014 The Unbearable Lightness of Being is a film that illustrates not only the struggles of living in a communist country in the 60’s,but also the development and maturing of the characters that struggle to understand themselves and find what they want most in life. The movie follows the lives of Tomas, Teresa, and Sabina and follows their interactions with one another and with the world around them. One can deduce the change in the characters throughout the film and also find the most interesting and redeeming characteristics they have. Lastly, the film is full of sexual scenes that allow the viewer to look deeper into the characters and how they develop throughout the film. Throughout the story, Tomas changes from being a carefree brain surgeon who goes from one woman to the next in a matter of days, to becoming a dedicated spouse to Teresa and ceasing his habit of bedding various women. This is exemplified when Tomas is in the bar with Teresa towards the end of the movie and one of the women on the other side of the bar looks at him very suggestively, instead of trying to go …show more content…

He was an attractive brain surgeon with an unbelievable amount of charisma and could make almost any woman want him. His view on life was the most interesting out of all the main characters in that he wished he could live life twice. Once with Teresa as his wife and once without Teresa so that he could compare the two and then pick which one had made him the happiest. He also believed that there was a difference between loving somebody and having sex with somebody and was able to compartmentalize and separate the two for a time in the film. Ultimately his view of life changes to becoming a good husband to Teresa and sacrificing his tendencies of being a womanizer albeit after having cheated on her multiple
