Research Assignment. Fiji. I chose Fiji for my project because I have always wanted to visit Fiji. It looks like a beautiful place, and it’s warm. Food. Basic elements of Fijian cooking consist of sweet potatoes, taro (which is a yam like root vegetable), rice, cassava, coconut and fish. The main cooking method is either open fire or using the underground cooking method. The underground cooking method is called “earth oven” the cooking technique involves a little more than the slow even release of heat from fire hot rocks or sometimes coal within a sealed underground enclosure to cook food. The Fijian monkey-faced flying fox, one of the most ancient fruit bat species. Iguanas, which includes the rare crested Iguana, and their relative’s snakes and geckos, are the major Fijian land animals. Bats: are the only native mammals in Fiji. There are six species in Fiji, out of six five are threatened or endangered. There are two groups of bats, the two groups are called Megabats and Microbats. Not much is known about the Fijian Flying Fox. A large amount of research on Fiji bats have been limited according to published reports in 1985 on cave reports. Megabats: include all flying foxes they are also related to lemurs. They are vegetarian, have excellent night vision and most live in trees but some live in caves. Local events. Fiji holds an annual Tennis Invitation Classic during February. Fiji also holds the South Pacific's newest women's action sport event. In May is the annual Fijian International Jazz and Blues Festival in Port Denarau. The three day festival has musicians from around the globe, including Australia, New Zealand, the UK and the United States. First established in 1960 and held in Nadi, Fiji's annual Bula Festival is held in July and it’s goal to raise funds for charity work while providing entertainment for the people. Locals and visitors are treated to live entertainment, marching bands, a Pacific dancing contest, Bollywood nights and even a beauty pageant. Diwali is quite a big deal. Known as the Festival of Lights, Diwali is held in October and is celebrated with ornate nights, candles, clay lamps and firecrackers which create a beautiful night time spectacle which is said to signify the triumph of good over
