Female Models Have you ever thought about someone or something based on the way they or it looks? These are known as stereotypes and misconceptions. Stereotypes are used to categorize a group of people. They are based on truths, but are usually exaggerated as much as possible. Misconceptions are formed from stereotypes and based on untruths. These assumptions might also be known as judging because of a group they are part of. Although misconceptions may be mistaken by prejudice, it is not always the case. Prejudice requires a level of behavior not just a thought process like judging would have. Stereotypes and misconceptions come from truths for the most part. Stereotypes are a widely believed mental picture of a group. Stereotypes people recognize easily anywhere, are groups we all know as ‘Preps’, ‘Jocks’, Nerds’, and ‘Loners’. Misconceptions are viewed as incorrect and don’t have a basis. In other words it is all based on assumption without appropriate knowledge, ignorance. Misconceptions are also mistaken by discrimination. Discrimination involves behavior, and there is no behavior in thoughts. Commonly known misconceptions are like; those who read books are nerds, or football players aren’t smart. Plus sized models like Ashley Graham are breaking that wall in the industry. Bringing that kind diversity into the field is ground shaking. She has become a role model for many all over the world, and opens doors for many women wanting to pursue the same road. The misconception that models have to do plastic surgery to look the way they do is also highly heard of. A big misconception that is being put on to female models is that they are the blame for eating disorders. Although this might have some truth to it because of how people perceive and look at them, they shouldn’t be to blame if it is not their doing. An article was posted on Vogue by Steff Yotka about How Sara Ziff and more than 40 other models are leading the charge against eating disorders. Once completed this study was published in the International Journal of Eating Disorders. I’ve had a taste of this world in a way because I have modeled in some small fashion shows since I was fourteen.
