Night Essay My claim is that the father and son relationship of Elie and his father had a huge impact on his life. The way Elie thinks and the things he does for his father. His relationship takes him to extreme measures supporting him like he is the number one person to live. Elie was a good kid but when it had come to his father everything went up and down for him. So his relationship with his father wasn’t a good one and it was only leading to disaster. But turns down his relationship with his father over time when he gets hurt or starts to suffer. Like when Elies thought was, “I did not move. What had happened to me? My father had just been struck, before my very eyes, and I had not flickered an eyelid. I had looked on and said nothing”. When his father was hit by the guard he didn’t know what to do and just stayed silent. Elies father still gets hurt and Elies does nothing when a Kapo prone the violence attacks his father. The only thing that was in Elies mind was, “I had watched the whole scene without moving. I kept quiet. When his father was beat up by the guard or even he was getting beat up by the Kapo. Elie could only think of himself, which is a good thing not wanting to get hurt for others in my opinion. Also, when Rabbi’s son ran away from him I would guess Elie would think of the same thing but instead wanted to protect his father. Then last when Elie’s father was about to die his last words was, “Elizer” which was Elies name. Elie was finally think that his duty is over on protecting his father. Also, Elie also thought, “free at last” which meant his can fend for him. So, his relationship with his father wasn’t good. Cause Elie thought the reason he is alive because of his father. The Holocaust will forever be known as one of the largest genocides ever recorded in history. 11 million perished, and 6 million of the departed were Jewish. The concentration camps where the prisoners were held were considered to be the closest one could get to a living hell. There is no surprise that the men, women, and children there were afraid. One was considered blessed to have a family member alongside oneself. Elie Wiesel was considered to be one of those men, for he had his father working side by side with him. In the memoir Night, by Elie Wiesel, a young boy and his father were condemned to a concentration camp located in Poland. In the concentration camps, having family members along can be a great blessing, but also a burden. Elie Wiesel shows that the relationship with his father was the strength that kept the young boy alive, but was also the major weakness.

Also, he remained calm when his father was harassed by the guards. In the book, Elie said “Then I had to go to sleep”(Wiesel 112) and after his father’s death, the thing he said wasn’t about his sadness. It was about his freedom. He said, “Free at last”(Wiesel 112). Towards the end of the book Elie says, “On my return from the bread distribution, I found my father crying like a child” (page 109). Elie most likely felt very insecure and scared because he saw his father crying. As Elie Wiesel points out, “I remained more than an hour leaning over him, looking at him, etching his bloody, broken face into my mind” (page 112). Elie had to live with looking at his father who was broken inside and scarred on the outside, which in could leave a long term stress on the boy because he could never get the picture out of his mind of a loved one being beaten up and scared to die. He was psychologically affected because of what he had experienced. When seeing something like this happen (especially to a family member) could leave people affected for life, leaving them only the picture of their family being broken down into fine powder making them feel that they’re going completely insane.
Elie, who was a teenager at the time of the novel, stood by his father’s side and assisted his father through physical challenges they had to face. Wiesel writes “I decided to give my father lessons in marching in step, in keeping time” (page 55). This shows that Elie is helping his father avoid the “selection” by giving him marching lessons to help him survive the death march. Elie stayed by his father’s side even in the harshest conditions. Elie writes “my father’s presence was the only thing that stopped me. He was running next to me out of breath, out of strength, desperate. I had no right to let myself die. What would he do without me? I was his sole support” (page 86-87). This shows that Elie remained loyal to his father by staying with him no matter what. For example, in one of the cattle car rides in between camps, workers were throwing pieces of bread into the karts for amusement. The consequence of this is that the Jews began fighting each other for the few crumbs. This effect one elder jew to sneak into the fighting to snatch a two pieces one for him and one for his son, however he is attacked and killed by his own son for the food and is only a few seconds after that killed by onlookers for the food. The results in Elie promising to himself to never be like that and to take care of his father, however he later on when his father gets sick he thinks it better if he were to die so he can focus on his own survival. His lack of emotion and tears shows that he understands how bad the Nazis' actions are and how cruel the world can be. This realization ultimately represents his loss of innocence and maturation.
First and foremost, Elie begins to question himself and his morals as a person. He acknowledges that the way he was behaving wasn’t like his normal self. “What had happened to me? My father had just been struck, in front of me, and I had not even blinked. I had watched and kept silent. Only yesterday, I would have dug my nails into this criminal's flesh. Had I changed that much? So fast? Remorse began to gnaw at me. All I could think was: I shall never forgive them for this.” (39) Elie seems to have become numb to the violence going on around him at this point. Elie watched his father get hit for simply asking where the restrooms were located, yet he stayed silent to protect his own skin. He loses his faith in himself and his will to stand up for what is right.
Upon entering the concentration camps, Eliezer and his father demonstrate a normal father and son relationship. In a normal father son relation, the father protects and gives advice to the son, and the son is dependent and reliant on the father. Eliezer and his father demonstrate this relationship to extremes throughout the beginning of their time in the camp. Eliezer reveals his childlike dependency upon entering the camp. Eliezer displays this dependency during first selection by stating, “The baton pointed to the left. I first wanted to see where they would send my father. Were he to have gone to the right, I would have run after him (Night 26-32) ” . Eliezer’s determination to stay with his father was constantly present. Eliezer reflects on a time in the camp which is all that he could think about was not to lose his father in the camp. Eliezer also requires his father’s protection during their stay in the concentration camps. Unintentionally demanding this protection, Eliezer remembers, “I kept walking, my father holding my hand” (Night 29). Eliezer continues to show his need for his father’s presence. At last, his father was free. He wasn't taking any more beatings, he isn't suffering, and he doesn't have to be in the concentration camps anymore. Elie is free, he doesn't have to carry the weight of his father anymore. Three months after his fathers death nothing mattered to him anymore.
