A lot of students in the public school system do not have a place to call home or even people to call family. This is a reality, teachers face every day when inside the classroom. Family is very important to a child’s social development. Family has a huge impact on the social development of a child. Children interaction with their family play huge impacts on their social development. According to a study done by Williams and Dunne-Bryant, “children’s interactions with parents help prepare them for the various opportunities, challenges, and experiences that they encounter later in life” (2006). Parents teach students how to socialize with peers and other people around them. One important relationship that affects student’s growth in social development is the mother-child relationship. Children model what they see inside the home. Children who come from stable married homes are more likely to see positive exchange and conflict resolution which help increase their social development. While, other students may not get this opportunity to see healthy relationships so they may not learn these skills. Children who constantly hear fighting or see more negative exchange then positive exchange are likely to repeat this with their peers. They do not gain the proper skills to create healthy relationships with peers. An example of this would be a student that hears fighting in their home over different stuff, the student is likely to fight with peers over stuff whether it be a ball that they need to share or a book.
