Survive, to remain alive or existent, to function and prosper, to prevail. The true definition of survive, is none other than remaining alive, at all cost, people can go to lengths they thought was not possible. Some survive because maybe they have strength, smart, or just because they did what they must’ve needed to do, to prolong their hour of death, that will end their legacies.
A quote that represents survival is, “Survival of the fittest”. The movie Hunger Games capture the quote very well, for that reason is, because 24 contestants, must fight in order to stay alive, until only 1 person remains left. Katniss Everdeen, a young woman, must protect her own blood, at the time her sister was heralded; Katniss’s heart began to beat uncontrollable.

While hunting with my brother and my father, we received an incoming transmission via satellite phone, for the reason we had a satellite phone is how big my uncle’s ranch can be. My mother was screaming, I heard her on the device, she said that there was a cougar outside the cabin, by the vehicle used to leave the ranch, plus my sisters screech’s. My father ran so fast and so quick I lost sight of him, but scared I was not, for my brother was with me. The responsibility of taking charge of a child kicked in, my father announced on the walkie-talkie to escort and protect my brother while on route to the nearest safe house (a hunting blind). I had a 12 gauge shotgun, plus a .40 caliber pistol, while Daniel had nothing more than binoculars, water, and sunscreen. We were only 10 yards away from the entrance when we heard rustling coming from the bushes behind us, I whispered to Daniel to sprint to the door, and I’ll be right behind him. As soon as he ran, a colossal male boar charged, I didn’t wish to kill anything if it hadn’t come down to it, but to survive I shot 1 shot from the shotgun to halt the forensic creature, although that was not enough. I shot again, taking aim at the head, my heart racing, memories of all my family appeared in a flash, and I must stay strong, for Daniel. Thankfully, it was enough to put an end to that boar’s life, but my brother captured the whole event, he’ll never forget that. I called for Father to inform him of what had just taken place, he said, “stay calm, stay on guard, and good shooting son, we are on our way”. I was awake for 12 hours straight, while Daniel lay sleeping on the bed, when it was 4:32 in the morning, we are were finally on our way home. The hero’s journey is a useful tool in analyzing narratives of all kinds, from myths to movies to everyday life. One of the most iconic stages in the Hero’s Journey is the ordeal, otherwise known as the belly of the whale or the cave, in which the protagonist has reached their darkest and most hopeless point – things cannot get worse. Once the hero gets through the main ordeal, their journey home is much more sedated. This can be paralleled to the encompassing plot structure, in which there is a climax, and then the intensity of the story winds down again. The lack of full emotional development of adolescents can lead to confusion and pressure while making life-or-death decisions during serious situations such as war. Along with being forced into war, living in inferiority to an overpowering presence only enrages the teenagers and their families more about the situation. Suzanne Collins depicts this class difference by writing, “Taking the kids from our districts, forcing them to kill one another while we watch- this is the Capitol’s way of reminding us how totally we are at their mercy. How little chance we would stand at surviving another rebellion” (18). The districts are outraged by the idea of forcing children into a violent atmosphere in which they have to fight each other for their lives.

Access to food draws a thin line between the privileged and the poor. In Suzanne Collins’ novel The Hunger Games, food has a massive impact on the different characters from the different locations. Katniss Everdeen, the protagonist, lives in the poorest district in Panem – District 12. Each different district has a specialty that they use to provide for the Capitol; District 12’s specialty is coal mining. Author Despail explains the districts in a way that makes it easier to understand by stating that “[e]ach outlying district in Panem forms an identity around not only the products the district is known for but also the ways in which its citizens cope with their lack of food” (70). Dystopia is a term that defines a corrupt government that projects a false image. Thus, in a dystopian society, making belief and comfort that the society is proper to its followers. One good example of dystopian society is the Hunger Games. The terms that describe that dystopia towards the Hunger games are a “hierarchical society, fear of the outside world, penal system and a back story” (“Dystopia”).
In The Hunger Games, the inequality between the rich and the poor is the biggest theme presented in the book. Throughout the book, Katniss mentions that starvation is common in District 12, and she has often gone hunting illegally in the woods for food for her family. This is an example of how the rich and the poor are separated. Wealth is only centralized in the hands of the rich, while the poor are left to starve, leaving disparity. The best examples of the inequality between the rich and the poor is seen in the tessera system, and the way the tributes are selected for the games. In the novel, they have what is called “the reaping”, which is the lottery at which they choose the tributes for the games. In a not-too-distant, some 74 years, into the future the United States of America has collapsed, weakened by drought, fire, famine, and war, to be replaced by Panem, a country divided into the Capitol and 13 districts. Each year, two young representatives from each district are selected by lottery to participate in The Hunger Games; these children are referred to as tributes (Collins, 2008). The Games are meant to be viewed as entertainment, but every citizen knows their purpose, as brutal intimidation of the subjugated districts. The televised games are broadcasted throughout Panem as the 24 participants are forced to eradicate their competitors, literally, with all citizens required to watch. The main character throughout the series is a 16-year-old girl from District 12 named Katniss Everdeen.
Survival is indeed a word that can change a human’s perspective on what they need to do to remain alive. In order to survive, people have been known to go to great lengths and to do things they would not ordinarily do. I have noticed this throughout my life by watching movies, and reading books. Most of the time, it is the main character who comes face to face with death, and does anything to keep themselves alive. I have set up a few great examples that show’s people in their survival situations, and what they will do to get out alive.
