“Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life! Because I lie and sign myself to lies! Because I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang! How may I live without my name? I’ve given you my soul; leave me my name!” (John Proctor) The Crucible had been written by, Arthur Miller in 1953. The Crucible is about the Salem Witch Trials and how it all had begun. Many superstitions had been spread about Witches and for how fast it had spread people had been accused of Witch Craft later being sentenced to death for what they are not guilty of. There are many examples of propaganda found in the story, The Crucible. Some types of propaganda in this play that had been used are fear, stereotypes and emotional appeal.

When Betty had pretended to be locked into a sleep that she could not wake up from her father had been getting antsy and growing angry not caring much about his own daughter however he did care about his reputation instead. If the Salem people figured out that Betty had supposedly been bewitched Paris’ reputation would have floundered. Towards the end Elizabeth and John had been speaking to one another about having a chance to survive, to live on. At first they where going to go through with it however when John had written his name down he couldn’t give up the paper because his name had been all he had for himself. He tried to beg the court to allow him to keep his name however they wouldn’t have it which leading John to rip up the paper that he wrote his name on later he had gotten into the carriage to be hanged. One of the most emotional scenes that had used this propaganda had been when John had lined up to hang. He had been as proud of himself and could leave with a clear conscience. He had led a prayer with the two others who where lined up to hang, the people in the crowd where unhappy about John and Rebecca being up to hang.     Arthur Miller wrote The Crucible as a protest paper to the brutality of the Red Scare .The Red Scare was the inoperable fear of Communism within the United States. This scare was caused as a result of the Cold War in the 1950’s. During the Cold War the US was scared of an attack of the Soviets, and the Soviets were equally as scared of an attack upon them by us. Joseph McCarthy, a Senator from Wisconsin, saw this fear as an opportunity to rise to power. McCarthy had many supporters that were primarily Republicans, Catholics, Conservative Protestants, and Blue-collar workers. McCarthy ruthlessly utilized scare tactics to get people to believe and follow him blindly into his accusations as to innocent citizens supporting Communism and either having them jailed or killed by providing phony evidence. Arthur Miller was not intimidated by this he wrote the Crucible as “an act of desperation” (Miller). This desperation was to counteract the lack of speaking out about personal beliefs during the Red Scare for the fear of breaking the law. In The Crucible, Miller wrote about a character named John Proctor who is very similar to Miller himself. Both the author and the character had to overturn the same personal paralyzing guilt, not speaking out soon enough. Nonetheless, their eventual overcoming of this guilt leads them to becoming the most forthright voice against the madness around them.
