In almost every social situation, poor communication will never end with a positive result. There is a great amount of poor communication in The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. For example, in act 3 scene 5 of the play, Juliet cannot tell her parents that she will not marry Paris because she already married Romeo. Lady Capulet misjudged why Juliet was so upset and assumed that she was grieving over the loss of Tybalt. The conversation that occurs is full of multiple meanings. For example: "God pardon him; I do with all my heart; and yet no man like he doth grieve my heart." Juliet is talking about Romeo, but Lady Capulet thinks that Juliet is angry at Romeo for killing Tybalt.
Because of miscommunication, Romeo and Juliet’s parents are not informed of their teenager’s conflicts, therefore making them useless. An example of miscommunication between the adults and adolescents is when Romeo locks himself in his room depressed. Lord Montague is deeply concerned about Romeo’s seclusive ways, saying he is “to himself, so secret”. Lord and Lady Montague want to “learn from whence his sorrows grow” so they can help him with his troubles (I.i.155-163). Because Romeo alienates himself from his parents, not telling them he is heartbroken from Rosaline, his parents do not know why he is upset. The parents of the two, Friar Laurence, and Romeo himself is at fault for the death of both of them. Romeo is too rash and makes bad decisions. Friar Lawrence does not think things through very well. Lastly, the Capulets and Montagues were too hateful towards each other that they were barley thinking about their loved ones.
This lack of communication is shown when Lord Capulet exclaims, “O’ Thursday, tell her, she shall be married to the noble earl (Paris)!” (3.4.21-22), and agrees to let Paris marry Juliet. Capulet does not know of Romeo and Juliet’s marriage, and this ignorance is a result of the secrecy of Romeo and Juliet’s marriage. Because of the feud, Juliet cannot tell Capulet that she is married to Romeo, and therefore she is promised to Paris, although she is a married woman. Forced to marry someone she doesn’t love, Juliet goes to Friar Lawrence and threatens to kill herself. This then causes Friar to set in motion the plan of Juliet’s fake death which eventually leads to both of Romeo and Juliet’s deaths. In addition, Capulet’s ignorance of Romeo and Juliet’s marriage, due to the lack of communication, causes Capulet to move Paris and Juliet’s marriage up a day. Timing becomes a major issue because Friar John, who is delayed a day, could not deliver the letter to Romeo, and since the marriage is moved one day up, Juliet must fake her death a day in advance. Thus, Romeo is oblivious to Friar Lawrence’s plan and makes the rash decision to kill himself alongside Juliet. Poor communication almost always results in unfortunate circumstances. Throughout The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, there are so many unfortunate circumstances that could have been easily avoided if direct, clear communication had been used. An example of this is in Act V Scene 1 when Romeo believes that Juliet has died and says, “Is it e’en so? Then I defy you, stars! / Thou knowest my lodging. The major foundational conflict throughout the whole story is the constant dispute and fighting between the Montague and the Capulet families; the two families are in a bitter feud which according to the prologue has lasted for several generations. This “ancient grudge” and deep hate between the families affects not just whole of Verona but also Romeo and Juliet’s love for each other. Shakespeare immaculately heightens the intensity of these conflicts throughout the story with his brilliant usage of stylistic devices, themes and imagery.
