Many people have a dark side where they are forceful and abusive. Frank Norris presents “brute within” in the novel, McTeague. The brute within would be described as a dark side to a person that normally wouldn't show but after being taunted long enough, it would make you commit to choices one in its right mind wouldn't normally make. The novel is about an abusive dentist, who hastily marries what he's yet to know a greedy woman. McTeague falls in love with Trina when she takes a trip to his dentist parlor and has work done on her teeth. Soon enough Trina Falls for McTeague and Trinas Greed for money catches up and pulls the inner abusive side of make Teague to come out. Frank Norris projects these elements to show that all humans inherently have a brute within. “Toward morning she died with a rapid series of hiccoughs that sounded like a piece of clockwork running down”.(Pg.282) After Trina taunted him with her money and not being able to even have a cent, his inner beast came out. Frank Norris made a statement that within all humans are animal inherited traits that can not be controlled. When Trina and mcteague first met McTeague was an independent generous man who wouldn’t have hurt a fly. Trina pushed his brute within to project and Mcteague not only stole all of the money but killed his own wife, without an instant guilty regret. The Brute within is an inherited trait we all carry. Frank Norris clearly projected it when Mcteague didn’t accept no for an answer when Trina denied the marriage the first time. After being married for some time McTeague is pushed into bringing out his inherited abusive side, when Trinas greed for money causes arguments daily. In the book Night by Elie Wiesel there were countless acts that would be classified as inhuman. For example the hanging of an angelic pipel, or killing one’s father for a piece of bread. Although both acts are extremely inhuman, hanging a child is more inhuman than killing one’s father for a piece of bread. Yet, to kill someone’s father for a bread is more in keeping with human nature in the fact that it is done for survival.
In the memoir Night, the narrator Wiesel recounts a moment when he witnesses the most horrific actions done by men,”I pinched myself : Was I still alive ? Was I awake ? How was it possible that men, women, and children were being burned and that the world kept silent “ (Wiesel 32). Wiesel was thinking and questioning about his existence. While also caring for his father because that's all he has left. It's even more important because, what Wiesel experiences in camps has been near death and fight for survival. Two significant themes related to inhumanity discussed in the book Night by Wiesel are, loss in religious faith and father and son bonding.
“On the bandwagon” is a term used to describe people that jump on trends that most people are doing. In The Crucible, when Rev. John Hale was interrogating Tituba, she started accusing two other citizens in hopes that the masses won’t accuse her of undergoing witchcraft/ being a witch. She is seen accusing the people, “there is Goody Good … Aye, sir, and Goody Osburn” (47) which shows Tituba’s characterization as a liar and a deceiver. However, the bandwagon is seen after she has accused the two people in which many of the other young girls also start to accuse others in hopes of not being accused. For example, when Abigail states, “I saw Sarah Good, Goody Osburn, and Bridget Bishop with the devil,” (48) many of the other girls started to accuse

Elie Wiesel remembers a moment where Mrs.schachter a women who had gotten separated from her family was yelling for the jews to look at the “flames”. Elie then states that “she received several blows to the head blows that could have been lethal”. These inhumane acts that the jewish people have been through have gotten them to be inhumane to each other like when they beat Mrs.schachter. Throughout the book Night there are several recurring themes such as inhumanity can cause inhumanity and survival instincts.

Jurgis's struggle between human thought and animalistic tendencies are evident in several major events in the book. In the beginning of Jurgis's life in Chicago, he can disregard most of the obstacles thrown at him by the corruption of man and keep his rational thinking dominant of his animal-like instincts. However, when Jurgis finds out that Connor has violated, harassed, threatened, and raped his wife Ona, he reached his breaking point. Jurgis was so overwhelmed with rage, he reverted back to his primal instincts and "sunk his teeth into the man's cheek" (153). We again see Jurgis "animal instincts" when he escapes from the city and lives in the countryside from a while. He has given up on being rational and has resorted to use his survival instincts like stealing and scavenging to survive. Sinclair shows us how these instincts will not help us survive in the end. Whenever Jurgis behaves like an animal, he is punished in some kind of way like an animal. When he attacks Connor, he is sent to prison and when he is in the rural area, he does not get any money to help him survive.
So do you consider yourself a human or an animal? How can someone show inhumanity towards other? When we are at the verge of death or have not ate anything for weeks, our nature tells us to do everything we can to survive even if it means fighting to the death over food. Some people were put into a situation of every man for himself and their animal nature comes out wanting everything for themselves and doing what they have to in order to survive. If we kill each other for food or survival, then we are no longer human but rather animals. We can see this in Night by Elie Wiesel, historical and current events, and everyday observation and/or experience.

Charles Dickens was an English writer born in the 1800’s. Dickens named this book A Tale of Two Cities because it is a parallel between London and Paris. In A Tale of Two Cities, there are many wrongs done by peasants who want to do right. Dickens is very descriptive partly to get across the idea of mans inhumanity towards man. Charles Dickens creates scenes like the guillotine, the use of the blue flies analogy and Madame Defarge’s hate stricken heart to develop the theme of mans inhumanity to fellow man.
Characters have played a large role in setting the theme of abusive power; they gain power over a group of individuals and misguide them. One obvious example from Lord Of the Flies was Jack. Towards the beginning of the novel, when the “elections” for the leader of the group took place Jack tried to get power. “‘I ought to be chief,’ said Jack with simple arrogance, ‘because I’m the chapter chorister and head boy. I can sing C sharp’” (Golding 22). After losing the election to Ralph, he became the head of the hunters. Here he abused the miniscule powers given to him over the small group of boys formerly known as the “choir”. The number of gays and lesbians in the U.S. is estimated to be approximately 8.8 million (randomhistory.com) About thirty-three percent of Lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgender commit suicide each year. At least fifty-two percent self-harm (dosomethinng.com). Lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgender are mistreated and misunderstood. Lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgender are treated inhumanely which causes them to go into a deep depression, self-harm, or even commit suicide. LGBT are humans, not just some creature from another world (personal).
The human race’s complexity is so muddled with various desires, styles, and actions that even a substantial response could only explain a fragment of human nature, but, even with the intricacy of humanity, there is a barrier an ethical conscience held by the human race as a whole that separates actions human and inhuman. In Mary Shelly’s novel Frankenstein, the characters Dr. Frankenstein and the creature he reanimates walk along the separation line between human and inhuman. Shelly uses the idealisms like Promethean desire and existential questions to exemplify the natural yearnings that humans strive for as they search for their purpose and aspire for something greater. Frankenstein’s creature and Frankenstein illustrate both human and inhuman qualities as they exemplify natural human desires, but also simultaneously act in eerie and coldhearted ways that separate them from natural human society.

In then, I was very special.” (113) Along with the dreams, Bone and her younger sister Reese performed in sexual acts together, calling them “private games”. However, Bone lost a part of her childhood when she was raped at the age of 12. She did not have a normal life and was forced to perform sexual acts with Glen. This was another influence that changed who she was as a whole. She did not get to be a carefree child. Bone had to grow up when she realized she was not protected in her family.
