Persuasion is simply “The act of causing people to do or believe something.” Persuading someone can be achieved with the three most common rhetorical appeals which are: logos, pathos and ethos. Logos is the logical reasoning provided by the author to the readers. There are two types of reasoning, deductive and inductive. Deductive reasoning starts off with the general idea and becomes more specific. Inductive reasoning goes from a specific part of the discussion to the general argument.
One example of logos comes from Car and Driver magazine, in a propaganda poster showing eight cars in a race track, seven out of the eight cars are painted red, these include a Ferrari F-40, a Porsche Carrera 911, an Acura NSX, a Chevrolet Corvette, a Porsche

The commercial starts by Shaq saying “This is big, you can get the same kind of therapy used by doctors and therapists without an appointment.” On the back ground a man at a therapy center is being treated for back pain, then you can see a guy doing the same kind of therapy in his home. This commercial depicts pathos by showing how back pain can stop you from doing simple things throughout the day, and how fast you can get relief from it. Then Shaquille asks him “How are you feeling?” The man responds “Feeling good Shaq.” The commercial ends with a description of the IcyHot Smart Relief and then the man enjoy his day outside. The purpose of the commercial is to show you how IcyHot Smart Relief can help you get rid of back …show more content…
Then she says “I sometimes look at the options in teaching and wonder why such an important job is so poorly compensated yet it receives more criticism than respect in America.” She points out how much work teachers have to do even when their students are on vacation, and she wants her readers to sympathize with how hard teachers work. She points out that teachers don’t exit school the day that students are released and confirms this by saying “There are reports to complete, rooms to organize and lesson plans to write,” and “Teachers spend hours writing lesson plans and aligning them to the standards.” Myra ends the letter by comparing teachers with doctors on this sarcastic quote, “I cannot think of another profession, even medicine, that mandates 100% success, pays little and then harps when a person takes a day off – personal, sick, or otherwise.” This articles serves the purpose of finding a way to understand why teachers may want a day off and why the public should stop being so harsh on
My dad used to say, " be part of something that's bigger than yourself". He always uses to force be to play sports. I chose to play basketball after seeing the all start game of 2009. Ever since I wanted to jump, shoot and Run back and forth. My dad thought it'll help be grow taller, which wasn't the case. Basket ball is more about communication but that's not true. It is about hard work, percesion, trust, being punctual and most importantly dedication. Through ethos, logos and pathos I will elaborate how being on the team change my
For example they use logos for when they talk about how many children are starving, how to fix the problem, and why there is a problem.
Logos means the persuading by the use of reasoning. For example, “ No one even knows whether salmon can even survive in the lower San Joaquin, which has temperatures more suitable for bass and bluegill, (McEwen 1).” The quote is clearly a display of logos because the author demonstrates to the reader that the government does not even make sure the salmon can survive in the lower San Joaquin, which then convinces the reader the project is not well thought out and cannot be trusted. I agree with the author’s viewpoint because if the government was really interested in the benefits for people, the representatives would have looked into all the details necessary to be able to succeed with the project. Another example of the author stating logos on his article for the reader to get a better understanding of what the government really cares for is, “Besides, scientific evidence suggests that California’s salmon problems have been caused in large part by oceanic conditions and the environmental mess that is the San Joaquin-Sacramento Delta (McEwen 1).” This quote is an alternative representation of logos since it proves a fact. The fact makes the reader extra believable since he uses scientific evidence about California’s salmon problems. It is clear to me the position that is superior to the other one because there have been numerous studies proving this project will
One of Berry’s topics that comes close to a use of logos is found in Paragraphs XI and XII, where he makes the case of an inescapable choice that we have to make. One choice is that we can continue to promote global and unlimited free trade, which must now be protected by a huge, expensive, and worldwide police force, maintained by several or all nations. Such a police force would only be effective as it “oversways the

Clinton uses logos to support her ideas on how to run the country. Logos is the appeal of using logic to assist a statement
Logos, the appeal to logic is a way of persuading a group with reason. After 9/11, many people were constantly worried that there might be another terrorist attack against the United States. Many people thought
There are many ways that the Obama speech portrays logos. For example in his speech he states that, “We’ve worked together to give more of our children a shot at a quality education; to help more families rise up out of poverty; to protect future generations from environmental damage; to create fair housing; to help more workers find good jobs”. President Obama uses logical reason in this quote because he is giving reasons for how we help students get a shot at education and how we helped unemployed people find good jobs. Another example where President Obama uses logos is where he states, “Murderers, Predators, Rapists, Gang leaders, Drug kingpins we need some of those folks behind bars. Our communities are safer, thanks to brave police officers and hardworking prosecutors who put those violent criminals in jail.” What this means is that President Obama is giving a good logical reason as into why these criminals
We see ads everywhere though-out our day even if we know it or not. Ads that make an attempt to persuade us one way or another. It could be to persuade someone into buying a product or even helping children that are in need. Either way, all these ads use certain persuasive methods, which include ethos, pathos or, logos, to get peoples attention. I saw an ad created by the National Association for Gun Rights. Obviously this ad is trying to let people that we have a right to have own guns. The ad shows a woman pointing a gun with the words “Mama didn’t raise a victim”. I’ve decided that the author was targeting woman that can presumably be victims of assault/abuse at any time. Given this information, the author is using pathos to let us know of the dangers that can be encountered at any given time as well as ethos because of the organization promoting the ad and even a bit of logos.
Strength of Argument: Ethos, Pathos, and Logos. Bell Hooks’s essay, "Keeping Close to Home", uses three important components of argument (ethos, pathos, and logos) to support her claim. Hooks develops her essay by establishing credibility with her audience, appealing to the reader’s logic, and stirring their emotions. She questions the role a university should play in the life of a nation, claiming that higher education should not tear a student away from his roots, but help him to build an education upon his background. Bell Hooks gains the trust and credibility of readers through knowledge of the topic at hand, establishing common ground with the audience, and demonstrating fairness.
When logos used, it’s to show the audience logic to persuade them by reason. If the facts or information is true and prove a statement over the argument then that is the use of logos. For example, the movie Twelve Angry Men (1957) directed by Sidney Lumet, an 18-year-old Latino boy is accused for murder of his father. When the all the points lead him to killing his father, Juror No. 8 (Henry Fonda) has reason that the boy is innocent, which leads to long periods of arguments. This scene is when Juror No. 9 (Joseph Sweeny) see’s Juror No. 4 (E.G. Marshall) rubs his irritated nose from his glasses. That’s when Juror No. 9 ask if Juror No. 4 sleeps with his glasses and as he replies with no. Juror No. 9 suspects that the women had the same glasses marks on her nose which she rubbed just like Juror No. 8 and with logical reasoning she wouldn’t be able to see the murder at night if she was sleeping and woke up. So when the other jurors change there vote to guilty to not guilty Juror No. 3 (Lee J Cobb) is the only one whose vote is still guilty and all jurors try to convince Juror No. 3 that logically she wouldn’t sleep with her glasses on and she wouldn’t be able to put her glasses fast enough to see the murder. In the end, this argument was successful, and logos is shown that the women didn’t see the murderer because she doesn’t sleep with her
logos consists of facts, statistics, causal statements, experiments, and case studies. Logos shows logical reasoning to the audience, and while Ethos and Pathos are important, Logos helps to give you the final push to persuade the viewer. Facts help to create belief.
Car commercials are made to convince the audience to buy their car because it is the best, or so they think. They do this by using different modes of persuasion; two examples of this are ethos and pathos. Ethos and pathos are methods used to persuade the audience into believing something that you want them to. Ethos is the ethical appeal that focuses on the author's credibility. It makes sure the audience believes something that an expert or character is saying about the product. Pathos, on the other side, is the emotional appeal that focuses on attracting the audience’s emotions. It makes the audience feel a certain way after watching the commercial. One example of ethos car commercial is “2015 Kia K900 Luxury Car – LeBron James Commercial – NBA Partnership – Valet” and “2014 Subaru Forester TV Commercial Daughter” car commercial for pathos.
The commercial takes place in front of a blank white background with simple piano and xylophone music throughout its entire duration. In the foreground are two characters, a man sits at a simple metal desk while the other stands off to the side. On the desk there are three stacks of money, one large pile that is meant to portray advertising, the medium pile the man draws from and a small pile which represents the amount of money Microsoft spends on fixing it’s operating system. The man in the desk wears a white dress shirt with his sleeves rolled up and a dark blue vest over it, black slacks, dress shoes, a green money-counting visor and a red “power tie.” He is middle-aged and overweight wearing glasses. The other character looks to be in his mid-twenties. This character wears a tight blue long sleeve shirt, tight jeans and sneakers. He has relatively long hair and is stands relaxed. The older man sits on the ...
