The thing I did best today was giving out my medications and assessing my patients. Scanning my patient’s bands and being able to give them their medications PO and IM was a great feeling. Also when my nurse went around in the morning assessing her patients I did the same thing. listening to their lungs, heart, bowel sounds, feeling pulses all over the body. Most important of all checking the patients level of consciousness. Later in the day I had a patient who lost one of there pulses in the leg, so it was a good thing we assessed her when we did. Today must've been the busiest day I've ever experienced at this office. There were so many patients. They all waited at least 3 hours just to be seen by the doctor. The good thing is the office closed at noon so everyone usually was able to make it their shift at work. I got a lot of experience assisting in extractions.
My interest in nursing first stemed when my grandfather was diagnosed with stage four prostate cancer. Hospice had come into their home, and I was amazed at how they coped with their job. The people who took care of the person I loved the most, were compassionate and caring. Most of all they helped all of us through a time of need. During that time I realized helping people in whatever way I could in the medical field, was the career for me. My grandmother was also a nurse. She would tell me stories of when she worked in different hospitals. When I heard all of her experiences, I wanted to make memories of my own in the nursing field. This past summer, I took a CNA course at Valley Falls/Holton, Kansas. When I enrolled in this course, I thought
You did an awesome work, I heard. We have monthly meetings, where we talk about the latest news in the nursing world, policy and procedure, quality improvement and many more issues. What I really enjoy about the meeting is that everyone can address his/her concerns without feeling afraid and intimidated. The meeting led by a registered nurse who is familiar with our day to day situation at work.
The nurse who chooses to return to school is secure, is not afraid to face change, and views education as preparation for the future (Altmann, 2011). Nonetheless, returning to school can cause disruption, which may lead to feelings of self-doubt. Developing coping strategies helps to alleviate these concerns. Personally, the decision to continue my nursing education revolves around my job. As an advocate for the mental health population, I want to become a leader who influences the future of mental health services in our region; education will help me achieve these goals.
When I began this journey I knew that Nursing was all I wanted to do and in order to succeed and do well in nursing school, it was going to require a ton of devotion and sacrifice. Nursing school did not come without its challenges, not only did we have to deal with going to class, clinicals, studying for exams, but we also had to add in the factors of jobs, family, marriages, children, sickness and our daily life. But our instructors encouraged us and pushed us to keep going, and for that we are grateful because we all made a decision to stick with it, and here we are today. It seems unimaginable that just a year ago this journey was just beginning, but here we are today a year later,
Certainly, I began with the goal getting of his vital sign and giving him a bed bath. Fortunately I had practice how to take a vital sign and giving a bed bath before my first clinical at the university skill lab and I had developed this confidence before my clinical tour. That day will be mastering the skill which I had just learned in manikins, and applying in real human with huge safety precaution. In between morning my instructor was giving me a brief before I getting to the patients room. From her experience she knew what kind of challenges and a patient behavior can be I face. As I proceeded to my own patient, I hit a roadblock that would give me a flat tire for the rest of the shift.
As I reflect on this paper, I realize that it is okay to feel a certain way when going through change. As a matter of fact, I have spoken to one of my peers who will also be applying to the nursing program this upcoming Fall and it turns out that she has also been feeling this way. I am not alone in this like I thought I was. I have realized that whatever is worth it, will not come easy. It is going to be an emotional roller coaster filled with doubts, excitement, success, let downs, but in the end it will definitely be worth it. I will be the nurse that I aspire to be.
Some things I need to work on are making sure I prioritize what should be done, and making sure I delegate any task that can be delegated, if I feel overwhelmed. As graduation comes near, I feel like I have learned so much more from being on this unit alone. I feel like I could take care of a couple of patients by myself, I improved on my medications, educating the patient, and providing adequate care for each and every patient. While on the unit, I got the chance to ask a variety of nurses different questions about their transition from new graduate to register nurse. I asked them why they choose this floor to work on , and a majority of them said because they precept on this floor and feel in love with neuro and the staff here. I also asked, how was your experiencing transferring from school to your first RN job, one nurse said that she only had the opportunity to orient for about three months before they put me on the floor because of a shortage of nurses. She did say that it was an excellent experience and she had a chance to learn so much. In addition, I asked them about the challenges they faced and how they overcame these challenges, they replied by saying that some of
I have always had a passion for nursing. As a child, I watched my mother getting up early, putting her scrubs on and headed out the door for a 12 hour shift. She was always content, and at ease to go for a long shift and even overtime at times. I love the fact that after work, she would always come home, satisfied with the day no matter how hard it was for her. She would sit and tell my brothers and sisters how she enjoyed the conversations that she had with her patients and what impact she had on their lives that day. Listening to these stories as a child, I knew that I wanted to become a nurse and listening to the same stories and helping people, making their day feel better. I wanted to follow my mom’s footsteps. At the end of a long shift, it is a rewarding profession, knowing that I am saving people’s lives, making them comfortable when they are near of dying, advocate and teaching them. This time, I decided to be more talkative and ask more questions about the patients. My senior nurse showed me a patient who fell down a couple flight of stairs and due to his accident, he injured his brain severely to the point where he couldn’t speak anymore. She explained to me all the medications that he had to take and how she had to look up the patient’s lab report because the medications he takes might affect him in different ways. After she was done with looking up his lab reports, I watched her feed the patient for an hour and thirty minutes. During this time, I really felt bad for the patient because he was half-awake and half-asleep while eating. It saddened me how we had to disrupt his resting time to feed him before he could take his medication. After the patient was done eating, I watched the nurse give the patient Lovenox, which I learned was given to patients who are immobile in order to stop blood clotting. After giving him his medication, we had to transfer him off the bed and into a chair, which was my favorite part about this clinical observation. I got to physically help move him off his bed and into a chair. This took 3 nurses, including myself to move him and it made me realize how nursing really requires teamwork. I then got to help clean him up and after changing him, it was time to leave the hospital. This clinical observation made me really excited to be a nurse because I
I have been working with the recreation director, who plans activities for the residents. I have painted the women's nails and read them letters from their children. Also, I have helped with special days like Ice Cream Day, Summer Picnic Day, and Clown Around Day. For each we create special word scrambles. I also have taken patients for walks. We also have birthday parties and exercise days.
I will need to keep assessing myself and setting new goals as the nursing profession and workplace are continuously changing.
