According to Treviño & Nelson, ethics are “the principles, norms, and standards of conduct governing an individual or organization” (as cited by University of Phoenix, 2012). Ethics are essential in the determination of what is right and wrong in a given situation (University of Phoenix, 2012). When we are born, we do not have any values, morals, or ethical systems in place, as these are learned and developed over time. Today, we are going to take a closer look at my personal ethics and the underlying ethical system that most closely applies to my life. We will also examine the effects that my ethics have on my performance within the organization. Caring for every patient with the same treatment consisting of respect and dignity regardless of where he or she comes from, or what their socioeconomical background may be. Consequently, holding their individual rights to the highest standard possible. As a nurse, I have made a commitment to the patients that I care for. Having a goal to making each and everyone successful in their journey to becoming the healthiest that they can be. An example that comes to mind is when I was working in the intensive care unit (ICU). While getting report from the off going nurse, I was told more about the patients socioeconomical status, how she smelled, and that the staff put her in the room that was farthest from the nurses station due to her smelling like cat urine and cigarette smoke. The nurse reported that she only had checked on the patient once during the time that she had been in the unit and that the patient was not really that sick. After finishing with report, I proceeded to complete an assessment and check on the patient every hour as I would for any other patient in the ICU. The patient ended up going into hypovolemic shock and required transfer to a larger hospital. If I would have only checked on the patient every four hours, as this was the minimum for the unit, chances are that this patient would have passed away.
