Physical Education Should be a Requirement for Graduation In the past decade, physical education did not get the same focus and attention as academic excellence in tertiary education. After graduating from high school, most students are no longer required to participate in any form of physical exercise. As a result, fewer students take the initiative to be involved in any forms of physical education. These students usually consist of athletes who need to keep fit for upcoming matches. However, universities such as Cornell University and Oregon State University still require students to take a year of Physical Education. They claimed that an engineering major have to take too many classes, and many of them are only offered in one quarter. Their concerns should be addressed. Physical education classes in University of California, Davis have variable units; this means that students have full control over their workload for physical education classes. If a student has a heavy workload for that quarter, he or she can take a class with only one unit for physical education. I am sure that a unit class will not be a burden to them. Many of these classes are offered at about nine to ten am. Therefore, students do not have to wake up early just to go to physical education classes; rather, these classes can be thought of as a “wake-up session” for students before they start with STEM-related courses later on in the day. Although its significance is weighted lightly compared to academic achievements, physical education can affect a student in positive ways that students may or may not be able to comprehend. Therefore, it is up to those who are in power with better judgments and wisdom to ensure that students can understand the benefits of physical education. Students should be required to complete a certain number of units of physical education classes before obtaining their degree. Physical education can be integrated to the general education requirement alongside topical breadths such as arts and humanities, social sciences, and science and engineering. However, students should be given the flexibility to choose their own physical education classes. This will ensure that students do not miss out on classes that are only offered during a certain quarter so that students can still graduate according to their academic plan. They should be given the choice to complete the requirement before graduation and not be forced to fulfill the requirements within their freshman
