Introduction
It is usually said that change is investable and that change is good in most instances, of which is true. Change is good as is stated as it is the stage of transforming from a certain aspect to the other, changing the ways of doing things, but with this regard I am discussing the changes in the occupational and work environment in South Africa, How it has transformed from ancient history to this point in time, the processes that were undergone, the type of occupations that were occupied as well as the work environment that employees were surrounded with. In this assignment I will be discussing the changes in the occupational and work environment in South Africa in more thorough details to provide a better understanding and also to dwell a bit deeper on the current occupations and work environment that we find today.
The changing of the Occupation and Work Environment
The occupational and work environment has transformed for many centuries, changes have occurred drastically as years went by. In today’s modern days the occupations that many employees occupy and the modern working practice and technologies have been enforced and implemented because they have a significant way or capacity in moulding and shaping the nature of work and its effect on individual’s behaviour. Currently, human beings are thinking more on the line of they need work in order to make a living. For that reason, work has become meaningless, disagreeable, and unnatural. Many view work as a way to obtain money and not a meaningful human activity that one does for themselves. The author states that there are two reactions of the alienated and profoundly unsatisfactory character of the modern industrial work. One being the ideal of complete laziness and the other, hostility towards work. Fromm believes the reason why people have animosity regarding work is due to their unconscious mind. Subconsciously, a person has “a deep-seated, hostility towards work and all that is connected to it” says Fromm. I believe what Fromm is saying to be true, after all I witness it everyday. Millions of people each day goes to a work which they are dissatisfied with and that can negatively impact their attitude
People have focused on improving health and prolonging lifespan of people since the ancient times. Before the development of systems for health care such as NHS and CDC, people used home remedies and it was not as effective. WHO defines health as “A state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity” as adopted at the International Health Conference 19461. Ashton, John et al (1991) states that The Public Health Act 1848 was passed by the government, in response to the urging of Edwin Chadwick, an English social reformer. This was supported by reports, from local branches of the Health of Towns Association (formed in 1844), of poor and insanitary conditions in many UK cities2. Winslow (1920) defined Public Health as “the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting human health through organized efforts and informed choices of society, organizations, public and private, communities and individuals3.” The Alma Ata Conference of 1978 reaffirmed the critical role of public health in attaining health for all, with particular emphasis placed on the centrality of equity, community participation and intersectoral collaboration4. How would you feel if your boss cut down your work paycheck just because he wanted a better life for them self? The men, women and children that worked in factories during the 18th and 19th centuries were brutally mistreated causing poverty, injuries and pallid body types (Thompson). At the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, working was incredibly unsafe because there were absolutely no labor or safety laws. Working conditions back then were extremely different from those that are in place today. The unbearable working conditions caused a vast amount of labor laws and rights.
Working in today’s society has changed in the last few decades. The economy and technology are the main reasons for this change. The type of job and environment where one works has also changed. The fact that many people work from home via the internet has drastically changed the workforce and the environment surrounding it. With this change comes new demands, expectations, and opportunities for employers.
The work place has changed through the course of the centuries. Technology and globalization are the causes of the change in the workplace in the twenty-first century. Who does what work, when, and how will continue to evolve as technology becomes increasingly more advanced and communication across the globe becomes more seamless.
At my work place, each member of the team is influenced and guided by the teams overall vision and strategic direction. We do have policies and procedures, which reflect the vision and strategic direction of the team. If we look at the governments vision‘Your health, your care, your say’, one area of this vision is ‘Protection’. The importance of ensuring, that there are sensible safeguards policy in place, against the risk of abuse or neglect as risk, is no longer an excuse to limit people’s freedom. My workplace has policies and procedures, to safeguard the service users e.g. risk assessments, care plans, adequate training etc. These policies and procedures, influence the way the team meet that vision and also provide the staff
Work place or occupational stress refers to any form of restrain that is experienced when there is no match between job demands and the output of the worker. The article ‘Occupational stress’ aims at showing ways in which stress people get from their work place affect them and what causes the stress. This condition may encompass many conditions that include maladaptive behavior, psychological disorders, cognitive impairment, as well as emotional strain. These conditions lead to poor performances at work, injuries, or biological reactions that in turn may compromise the health of the employee.

Headaches, aching muscles, exhaustion, and many more health issues have workers wondering why this is happening. All of these symptoms can be linked to stress in the workplace. Job stress has become more of a problem than ever before. Numerous studies show that job stress is the major source of stress for American adults and that it has escalated progressively over the past few decades (“Workplace Stress,” 2004). Stress has become more common and costly in the workplace not only for the workers, but also the companies. What is considered stress in the workplace? Many companies everyday are dealing with issues related to stress in the workplace. For example, the Blackpool Fylde and Wyre NSH Trust Foundation Hospital noticed there were issues with stress when people began calling out sick. Their consultant for occupational health began to see a pattern of worker stress that might be the case. With stress being such a big issue in the workplace, are there ways a company can decrease the amount of stress?
In Today’s world, the composition and how work is done has massively changed and is still continuing to change. Work is now more complex, more team base, depends greatly on technological and social skills and lastly more mobile and does not depend on geography. Companies are also opting for ways to help their employees perform their duties effectively so that huge profits are realized in the long term .The changes in the workplaces include Reduction in the structure of the hierarchy ,breakdown in the organization boundaries , improved and better management tactics and perspectives and lastly better workplace condition and health to the employees.
