Jose Campeche is the first known Puerto Rican visual artist and considered one of the best rococo and religious artist in the Americas and gained international fame, he has left behind a legacy that even people today are astonished by his glorious artwork. Jose real name is Jose de Ribafrecha and was born on December 23, 1751, in San Juan, Puerto Rico and died on November 7, 1809, in San Juan, he was 57 years old. His parents are Thomas Campeche and Maria Jordan y Marques, His father was a feed slave who lived in Puerto Rico. He was a decorator and a restorer on old art work he was also a painter, he was a big influence on Jose and his passion for art. He built the altar of Saint Anne’s church in San Juan. He painted mainly portraits and things related to religion, he also loved to use vibrant colors to reflect Puerto Rico landscape. Jose studied Latin and philosophy and received a good music education at the Royal Convent of the Dominican Order in San Juan. Campeche didn’t have a teacher to show him technique of painting until he was 25 years old. He was trained by Luis Paret y Alcazar who was a court painter, in 1755 Luis was sent to exile. He 18th century European techniques, Campeche gained and perfected his natural talent. It helped him create and achieve his own sense of style on his realistic paintings and his art work with intricate detail. After Paret was sent away Campeche had to train on his own during that time he showed more originality to his work. Jose had two major themes for his artwork.
