At the end of every College football season there is an award given to the all around best player of that current season. The Heisman Trophy is the name of that award and it is the most prestigious award a College football player can receive. In 2012, the first ever Freshman to win the Heisman Trophy was Texas A&M quarterback, Johnny Manziel. Johnny broke numerous records as quarterback and was on track to be the greatest quarterback college football has ever seen. However, he cut his college career short and decided to go play in the National Football League and that’s where things started to go bad. ESPN’s Ed Werder met with Manziel and the former Heisman trophy winner claimed that he has changed his life for the better and is ready to restart his career as a quarterback in the NFL. However, just because he claimed that he changed his life around and would like to continue playing in the league doesn’t necessarily mean that any team will even want to take him. Looking at the situation from a team owner’s perspective, there seems to be many issues with Johnny Manziel. The first issue would be all the attention that he would attract to the organization. The attention from picking up Johnny as your quarterback would not be great for team chemistry and would take the spotlight off the team’s better players. The second issue is that you can’t trust him to act like a professional. As owner of the organization, how can you trust a player like Manziel who spiraled out of control in just two years. Manziel would have a lot to prove to show that he is focused on playing football and nothing else. The final issue dealing with Johnny Manziel is that whenever he returns to the NFL he will already have a four game suspension for substance abuse from his last season in the league. Johnny claimed in the interview with ESPN that, “I only need one team to believe in me”. Clearly Johnny is trying everything in his will to earn a spot back on a team but there needs to be more than just words to prove that he has matured and is ready for the next step. As an owner or coach of an organization, Johnny would have to take multiple drug tests and alcohol screenings to prove that he is living sober. The next step would be too make him earn his position with the team, examples of this would be too build positive relationships with teammates and coaches and also the fans. If Johnny can realize that the team doesn’t need him then that should motivate him to be better and put out plenty of effort. Another way to get Johnny to prove he is on the right track is to talk with his agent and get him doing free volunteer work and participating in events with kids such as summer camps. If an organization takes a gamble on him and decides to pick him up, then the organization should set strict rules for him to abide by. The reasoning behind giving Johnny Manziel strict rules is simply due to the fact that a lot of people’s careers could be riding on the decision to give him a second chance.
